Interesting opinion piece about the dichotomy.

The Warrior at the Mall

Marines had probably started saying it as early as 2002. “We’re at war while America is at the mall,” some lance corporal muttered to another as they shivered against the winds rushing down the valleys in the Hindu Kush...

There’s something bizarre about being a veteran of a war that doesn’t end, in a country that doesn’t pay attention.

17 years after 9/11 we're still at war. Pretty soon we'll have retirees who will have known nothing but war for their entire career.

Even better, people who were born, raised, and now adults who have only experienced the US being at war; it has always been like this for them.

I am beginning to think 1984's endless wars is getting more and more correct.

Endless war goes hat in hand with empire building and putting your hand in every pie. Through most of the 19th Century we were at war—if not with Britain, Mexico, Spain, the Philippines and the southern rebels then with various American Indians. The Regular Army was pretty busy.

And the British were at least as busy fighting the Russians, French, Americans and various wars in Asia, Africa and the Americas. But the 19th Century British had the good sense to make their two wars with Afghanistan short ones—get in, make an impression and get out. As long as Afghanistan wasn’t inclined towards Russia the Brits were content. The Great Game and all that.
