Not sure if this is the proper section to ask this question, but does anyone know of an active message board where members of the military and veterans (and their supporters) hang out? We are putting together a fundraiser for a Vietnam era vet that has fallen on hard times due to cancer and medical bills. Common story we are finding out...

Any info is appreciated. Tks

Is he receiving a VA pension? What is his disability rating? Can you contact a veteran's service officer to see about getting him regular assistance.

He should be old enough for Medicare. Is he seeing the VA?

There is a military forum here also.

Good luck.

He is not receiving a pension and I don't think he's really researched what the VA can do for him. He is on medicare but that only covers certain things - and it's the "gap" and non covered items that have really taken their toll. Tough situation all around.

Can anyone contact a veterans service officer for someone? I am not a relative.

Tks.

If he hasn't researched - have to say this - are you sure he is a veteran?

Offer to take him to a veteran's service office.

Is there a VFW post close by?

Yes he's a veteran. I am going to investigate the possible benefits that he may be entitled to. He was not dependent on anyone until medical issues consumed most everything. Tks.

Vietnam vets went through hell. There is nothing dependent about being receiving medical care and a pension for the horrors they endured.

There are conditions that are linked to agent orange - prostate cancer and diabetes for example, so if he used VA assistance, he should not consider it being dependent.

We have a vet friend who went through a similar situation. He was even wounded in "combat" area-- Central America, not really sure if that is considered a combat zone or not. Anyway, he never felt that he would need VA benefits so never filed. Later when the cumulative injuries from jumping out of planes started to take his toll, he wasn't covered. And much of this (surgery, etc) was in his military medical records. He would have more than likely been 60% or even 100% disabled. But pride got in the way. He was diagnosed with cancer and would have been treated at the VA, and with their help even started a retroactive application process. Alas, he died before he could get a determination. This is why getting your VA paperwork done before you retire or in his case just leave service, is so important!

Sure you feel great as a 40ish "retired" person..that won't always be the case.
