Big change in the works:

V.A. Seeks to Redirect Billions of Dollars Into Private Care

The Department of Veterans Affairs is preparing to shift billions of dollars from government-run veterans’ hospitals to private health care providers, setting the stage for the biggest transformation of the veterans’ medical system in a generation. Under proposed guidelines, it would be easier for veterans to receive care in privately run hospitals and have the government pay for it.

Hopefully this will work out.

I have no problems with the VA. The one hour+ drive from my house and then some waiting once I got there was getting tiresome.

I now have a 6 minute drive to a civilian hospital...

I’ve been advocating something like this for years. Turn it into a health insurance instead of a healthcare facility.

They should do this, driving two hours for something that can be done down the street is rather ridiculous.

Also, some of the clinics are overwhelmed, the appointment is out far in advance due to so many people. They need to off-load some of the rather trivial, especially non-claim related things to the private sector.

Allow me my usual rant about the VA.

First off, I believe any retiree or anyone that served in the military and has a military injury/issue should get the best medical care available and at no cost for the VA.

The problem I see is the system being clogged with those that did serve but their health problems have nothing to do with their military service. Like the guy who sat on his butt driving a truck around in Germany while in the US Army for two years some 40 years ago. None of his issues are related to his military time. My brother-in-law for one.

PS
I spent 6 years in the US Submarine Service and I have never once stepped inside the VA.

End of rant.

The Department of Veterans Affairs pushed back Monday at a New York Times report suggesting that expanded community-care options under the VA Mission Act would lead to the "privatization" of VA health care and the eventual shutdown of some VA medical centers.

"Privatization is a myth and to suggest otherwise is completely false and a red herring designed to distract and avoid honest debate on the real issues surrounding veterans' health care," Curt Cashour, a VA spokesman, said in a statement.

The Mission Act, passed last year by Congress and signed into law by President Donald Trump with the support of veterans service organizations (VSOs), was intended to overhaul and continue funding for the VA Choice program on private-care options. That program was riddled with inefficiencies, both for veterans and the community-care providers.
