My daughter's friend who is about to graduate high school wants to know something. I don't know because I was in the USAF and that has been 30 years ago.
She watches this show on TV called "Carrier" and she has become interested in the Navy but not yet to the point of seeing a recruiter. She said they showed a barber shop on the ship where the service members get haircuts. She wants to know if those barbers are military trained and, if so, how hard it is to get that job and the traning to be a barber in the Navy.
I don't know and I could not find anything on the web except the general SH occupational Navy rating that seems to cover alot of differing jobs.

Yeah that is the ships serviceman rate. That rate is dead end. Since the asvab score for that rate is not high you get a lot of people that get into it. That makes advancement real slow. Most people get into only to retake the asvab and try something else later. As far as getting into the barbershop it all depends. You don't get that training initially, but most of the 6-10 year SH's I know have that school. If you get to the ship and they dont have any barbers on board, that increases your chances of getting it. ALso the larger the ship they better your chances. When I was on destroyers it was only 1 barber, and about 3 qualified barbers onboard. WHen I was on Enterprise there were 2 barbershops and I can't remember how many chairs, so the oppertunities for getting that school are greater. To be honest with you I would pick something else. When she is not going to be doing that, she will be doing laundry(it gets hot as hell there)Filling soda Machines, and working the ship store. Its just like a retail job on the ship. Now if she is a hot runner and move up the chain, the chances for getting into a supply program where she can become a officer are avail.

Yep! Join the Navy, go to Basic and sign up for the Supply Rating, go to "A" School for the Rating, take College classes in Procurement, Inventory, Purchasing, get an Officer's Commission and become a Supply/Procurement Officer. It does take a lot of "book work", but at the end, it sure is worth it.

Thank you. I will let her know the scoop and she can decide what to do from there.

KevK, ya should just tell her the Air Force is better... (Just kidding; my father was a Navy officer and it would've been my second choice had I not gotten into the USAF)

Me too. No Army and no Marines! She just seems to be infatuated with serving on a carrier. I told her that everything you see on TV is not really how it is (although I have never seen the show). I recall naval enlistments went up after "Top Gun" came out too and it is my view that you should not base a life decision on a movie or TV show.

True! From serving in the Navy years ago, the Show doesn't show everything about Navy/Carrier life.......such as:
Disciplining someone
Getting "wrote up"
Disagreements between sailors
Shipboard accidents
It's not all "smiles" and "getting along" like the Show portrays.

I think they started changing that after I got out. Or maybe it's STILL that way.

EDIT:**the way it USED to be, at least...**

NO women on combat mission vessels...including carriers. Enterprise might have been an exception, training carrier of out ....Mayport? The only carrier I knew of permitting women was down in Florida, anyhow.

More likely to get a shore station or tender duty. Auxiliary ships...AE, AO, AFS, AD, AS...seeing a pattern here?

Most ships are now configured for women (Co-ed). Even the smaller ones such as DDG's and CG's. I think Frigates are the only ones left that are all male.
