my prediction is that I dont think this will be the last we hear about this young man. I believe he is troubled. If he does not get help, there will be some news in the future.

What we didn't know is that his release was negotiated.

Update:
American soldier, Travis King, released by North Korea now being flown to San Antonio, reports say.

Pvt. Travis T. King, the American soldier who crossed into North Korea on July 18, was released into U.S. custody Wednesday after weeks of diplomacy mediated by the Swedish government, U.S. officials said.

Wonder... Was it worth it??

Oh, I imagine his future includes a court-martial for desertion.

I actually doubt he gets a CM. I am betting he will be discharged general under other than honorable conditions. I willing to bet the army is just going to be glad to let him go. He had some trouble. He paid a steep price for some of it even before he took off running. I could be wrong and they go harder on him. If I were deciding his case I would give him to his mother and hope that he gets some help.

I agree. A court martial would be a PR disaster. Absent them showing that he actually aided and abetted the enemy, I'm fine with a general discharge under other than honorable conditions.

I will also say that behind the scenes, the unit he was in was admonished for not following him all the way home and allowing him that diversion. I do not expect anyone to lose their jobs over that but if I were the 1SG I would expect to be standing in front of the BN CSM and the CO standing in front of the BN CDR. It is one thing to send home a soldier that has some trustworthyness on his own, sending home a soldier that has proven his untrustworthyness. In our deployment we even sent an escort to Germany for injured soldiers except for one time where a young woman in our unit was on sickcall and no one there informed the unit of the need to transfer her to Germany for care. She was lost to the unit for 5 days.

I recall during the Vietnam War there was a young Marine named Robert Garwood who was captured by North Vietnam and agreed to serve as a prison guard for the enemy. I believe he was given a court martial and a dishonorable discharge.

That was then. Highly doubt this guy will see a court-martial.

That and this kid didn't do anything approaching that kind of activity. He just got into some trouble with S Korea which he paid for in incarceration.

Let’s just say that they decide not to prosecute to the fullest extent possible.

Does that send a message that any service member who is fed up and wants out of the military can just cross into North Korea without any consequences?

Because this likely won’t be the last time it happens.

The administration says that they made no concessions to North Korea, and I believe that statement. Allegedly, the North Koreans reached out to Sweden and let them know they wanted King ejected from the DPRK.

On a side note, I found this statement from the administration humorous: After “intense diplomacy”, he was released. But how intense can it be when the DPRK wanted him out of the country ASAP?

So even though we didn’t give any concessions, how many man hours were spent securing his release? He was also flown to Shenyang by the US defense attaché, then he was flown to Osan Air Base, then he was flown to Joint Base San Antonio (formerly known as 3 bases Lackland, Kelly, Brooks).

Thats a lot of money spent on this one kid.

If you don’t send a message, the next kid will be making a run for the border soon, and that will cost money too. Or even worse, what if the DPRK is fed up with incursions on their border and they shoot next time?
