Last year I sent off for my military records from the national archives. They finally sent the package this week for a turnaround time of one year. My neighbor also experienced a year-long turn time.

Just a heads up if you have sent away for your records.

I was at Camp Lejeune in 82 for MOS training but wasn't sure if it was for more than 30 days; I was there for 7 weeks. Being a reservist I am not considered a veteran however I will be signing up for VA healthcare. I am currently 60 y/o and have to wait five more years for medicare. This is huge for me as I currently pay 10,932 a year for crappy health insurance with a 6,500 dollar deductible.

I requested a replacement set of my medals/awards. It's been over 2 years since I requested them. The last correspondence that I got from them is from about 8 months ago when they said that my request has been approved and they will be shipped. <sigh>

I think there are lawsuits in the works however you have to have been diagnosed with a condition. I would rather have my health than a million bucks. On a side note being 18 at the time I believe I survived on beer for the most part.

If someone in the ‘80’s was drinking water on Camp Lejeune wearing 3M earplugs, they’d be set for life.

I served from 1977 to 1983 and I got out. Four years later, in 1987, I re-enlisted. At that time I requested a copy of my microfiche.

At that time, my service record began with a smugged copy of my old DD-214 dated 1983.

In 2001, I reached my 20th anniversary of Active Duty service, and in accordance with the High-Year-tenure policy I was put onto mandatory pension and transferred to the Fleet Reserve. Right before my retirement, I finally received my microfiche records. Just in time for a complete review of my service, the clerks were typing up my last DD-214 as I went into retirement.

It took them 14 [fourteen] years to access my records.
