Do Marines earn college credit when they are on base, just for being in the Marines, or are there classes on base that they have to take? Just wondering, thanks!

Many military jobs and courses have some amount of college credit 'recommended' by the American Council on Education.

Colleges are under no obligation to accept this recommendation, but some do.

It's typically not very many credits. Higher ranks are often recommended for more. Some very advanced or lengthy schools (nuclear, language, etc.) are recommended for quite a bit, but it's not the equivalent of a full degree. It just helps fill in credits.

Most bases have courses you can take, but on active duty your primary mission is to do your assigned function and any additionally assigned duties. College is a distant runner-up to those primary duties.

This was decades ago but I received college credit for a required Physical education class for being a Marine.

Yes. Many colleges take the courses members of the military (all services), and give credit towards potential degrees. In fact in 2006 I began my college after 25+ years of service and was given 39 credit hours towards my eventual Bachelor's.

That is a pretty open question, and the answer is generally "no." As noted above, you may get a Physical Education credit. Depending on your MOS, you may get credit for an English or Comm credit for a Public Speaking class. For all branches of the service, it depends on how long you were in, what your rank was, and what you did. Service members are also allowd to enroll in college classes.
