Red face Shore duty in US or Short duty overseas, which has the most chance of being sent IA?

My husband and I are to the point where he needs to make a decision on shore duty and then where to go shore duty. We don't know if he has more of a chance going IA if he stays shore duty in the US or if he does shore duty overseas . can anyone help? Thanks!

from what i have been hearing, most reups are including (potential) IA language. dh isnt up for new orders yet, but two shipmates from his division recently reuped while on deployment and they both have the potential of being called to IA. one just got back.

Your Fair game for a IA no matter where you go. Nobody is really safe from a IA. I tell people there best bet is to Choose your IA, so you can pick your job and location instead of ending up in Iraq as a prison guard or truck driver.

It all really depends on the rating. The most sure-fire way to not do an IA is to be on Sea Duty in an undermanned rating on a ship about to deploy. Otherwise, there is no real formual. DH will get the best info talking to his rating manager, his Chief, or his detailer. Start with his Chief.
Most Navy IAs are 14 months or less. If he takes a GSA - an IA with PCS orders - then he'll only do one year with a follow-on assignment for his next tour. You will get to stay in the area of his current duty station - or you can choose to move to the ultimate duty station (unless it's overseas - then you can choose an alternate location while he's away).

Hope this is all helpful. But I really can't stress that he needs to talk to his Chief.

ahh, good thing there's Google.. IA: San Diego FFSCs - Individual Augmentee Information pages

they were just starting that when I retired. What's wrong with going overseas to support the GWOT? It's good that all services are now allowed to go on the ground. I had to beg and plead and only got to go to Bosnia. We actually had people fighting to go to Iraq and Afghanistan for ground missions.

My husband is on an IA now, think you have a chance no matter where you go really. I know his number was coming up (his community doesnt necessarily follow typical GSA rotations) so he volunteered for a shorter tour. It hasnt been that bad actually, its been one of our best deployments if you can say that because any time away sucks. he doesn't even have great communication compared to others there who stay inside the wire, those guys are calling back home2x/day and chatting with their wives for hours. My husband and I talk once/week but generally chat for 30 min/day 4-5 times/week which is a significant improvement from any ship tour he did.
just saying it hasnt been bad and I was dreading it too.
