Why did we let these get mothballed?

They seem to be worth it, just from an intimidation standpoint!

Iowa class battleship - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I agree! Nothing like sending a message to a hostile government with a 2,000 pound projectile attached to it!

I toured the USS Missouri Battleship in Pearl Harbor many years ago.

The DDG's have taken their place with the Tomahawks. I believe after the Iowa tragedy, storing the powder was an issue.

That was quite a tragedy; the Iowa... Read some good articles about it. I'm not sure Seaman Hartwig was guilty...

They were a maintenance nightmare, too costly to update and had to maintain too large a crew. The Navy in continually attempting to reduce required manning on all its vessels due to costs.

Yeah, the American version of the Maginot Line. We have scads of aircraft carriers in case we need to refight the battles of Midway and the Phillipine Sea; we should have battleships in case we need to refight Guadalcanal, Jutland or the Denmark Straits.

Unfortunately, even the military forces currently there can't do anything about the pirates. Its not the weapons involved its the willpower. The Iowa would just provde more sailors to wave at the pirates as they go by then a DD would.

Iowas make for a great show, but they would be missle sponges in a Great powers war. And since all the targets we need to hit during regional conflicts or COIN ops are'nt located w/in 20 miles of a deep water coastline Carriers and their CAG's are much better power projectors.
