We are getting a new VA hospital in Cape Coral!!

Homes are affordable, weather is tropical, beaches, golf, fishing, etc.

My husband is Active Duty, we are retiring here

Enjoy your retirement close to the water! And, like always, those of us who live inland in places like Ohio will open our wallets to help you all in FL rebuild the next time a hurricane storms ashore...

I have basic needs a base and a VA Hospital (not a clinic), a lot of those on the list don't really meet those needs. I like Ft Huachuca (Sierra Vista AZ) for the weather and the base but the VA is over 60 miles. Tucson (Davis monthan AFB) and Alberquerque (Kirkland AFB) would do the trick, I think. A lot of places have tax breaks that have limits or salary caps making them useless. Californias Veterans Homes are also a temptation. Travis AFB has a VA Hospital on board and Yountville nearby. The housing bubble made that an option

Have you considered an area with a teaching hospital?

Civilian teaching hospitals are usually very well equipped and your surrounded by doctors any time you go in for a procedure.

We enjoy having one nearby.

Forest- what is your issue against VA hospitals? Many services that vets need are ONLY offerred at the VA, not everything is covered by Tri-Care. Why are you bashing vets who want to live by a VA hospital? BTW many VA's ARE teaching hospitals!

VA hospitals are great for vets. Overall healthcare in our nation today is in crisis, many people simply do not have enough coverage. For vets the VA is great.

Since it's inception the VA has had a long history of being undermanned and ill-equipped. But with so many vets we need to be something for them.

While I ma a vet, I am also a military retiree.

I have full coverage provided for me and my family.

I can go into any civilian hospital. I can be seen by high paid doctors and specialists nearly anywhere.

I can go into teaching hospitals that have all of the latest equipment and procedures.

Yes, I said that.

For vets the VA is great!

Vets get offered services that they would have to pay for elsewhere.

I have never heard of any such thing.

I am not bashing anything.

VA hospitals are fantastic in the context of vets need something.

However this sub-forum is about retirees. We can go anywhere.

There is a huge difference between VA hospitals as a possible teaching environment and civilian teaching hospitals.

TRICARE is the health care program serving Uniformed Service members (Active Duty Service Members), Active Duty Family Members, Retired Service Members & Families: TRICARE Benefit At-a-Glance (http://tricare.mil/mybenefit/home/overview/WhatIsTRICARE/TRICAREBenefitAtAGlance?ref=Benefits_at_a_Glance - broken link)

This thread is not specifically about veterans it is about places for military retirees to retire.
So, lets please stay on topic.

The best place is really where you want to be, if you want to be near a post then so be it, I wanted to be near a post for several reason's jobs being the top of the list, but I planned that from July 7th 1988.....do something in the Army that will get you a job working for the Army either by contractor or government.....

One last thing on insurance, if you have a primary insurance (in my case BCBS) and have Tri-Care prime (as I do) and for "what ever reason" you use use anything in the Tri-Care system (perscriptions/appointments/whatever)...your Primary insurance WILL be billed by Tri-Care.....

Then there are those of us who live way up north, who actually enjoy the snow, hate the heat and humidity, but have the best of both worlds by traveling to the FL Keys for a few months in the winter!
