How is life at Tyndall AFB?
My husband applied for an AGR position at Tyndall AFB. We are 35 yrs. old, we have one 3 year old daughter, and we have a child on the way.
I'm looking to hear from people who have been stationed there at Tyndall. How is it? What have you loved about it and not liked so much? I'm looking for opinions on the actual base, the city and community, the area of the panhandle, the weather, the amenities, the outdoor activities, etc. We've never even been to the panhandle, so I don't know too much yet.
Thanks!

Look into the Florida forum and search for PANAMA CITY (where Tyndall is) and PANAMA CITY BEACH...
I had a TDY there, Tyndall was a small base...Was he active duty before? Life in AGR and AD are very different...

Yes, he is AGR right now. So he would just be going from AGR to AGR.
I have done that search that you suggested several times. I hear some good but a lot of not-so-good. I keep hoping there is more good that I'm just not hearing, I guess. I was now just looking for a military perspective.
Thanks!

I've never lived there, I've spend a total of two weeks there in the past 18 months...I spent 99% of my time in PCB beach...My point was the residents offer valuable info...I don't know what they said, but for example is the school system is a joke, I wouldn't just brush it off if it's important to you...In general, all of Florida's major metro areas have problems with low education and high crime...You have to go on a case by case basis but that's why I said in general...
I'm in a good mood, I'll answer some of your questions...Average weather in in the winter when you wake up low 40s and it will rise to 50 by mid afternoon...It's in a bad cold spell right now, like most of the S.E...It's hot and most would say unbearably humid (like all of FL)in the summer...Base was tiny, appeared to be little to do, but I wasn't a resident...The few residents of the base I did talk to say most people leave and spend their time in Panama City BEACH...But since if he gets offered an AGR, he'll fit right in...Panama City (PC) seemed like just a regular town...During spring break, you're going to deal with spring break idiots who book hotels in PC thinking it's PCB...PCB has a lot to do but is beach and tourist oriented...Also is the spring break capitol of the world and there can be a lot of traffic during spring break, the spring and summer at PCB...It does have some the most beautiful beaches in the world...It can have a lot of seaweed and/or jellyfish at certain times...They have a ripleys, arcades and amusement rides...Also, if you get a babysitter, might have a fun at a bar there...Activities? Parasailing and fishing mainly...Also shelling, getting a tan or people watching...Don't like the beach or meeting new people/tourists? Stay away from PCB...PCB has the most to do of the entire panhandle...

I agree with what you said. Im not in the military yet, but I will be signing into the Air Force here shortly. I have lived in PCB for a short while (currently living in Jacksonville FL) and this past Christmas, it was 70-80 degrees on Christmas DAY. Since then, we have in fact had a cold spell, getting as low as 23 degrees and highest as much as 59 degrees or so (during this spell) PCB is a big party town during spring break and summer, when its winter/spring/fall its almost like a ghost town just about. I have been to the base there (ex was in military) and I would have to say it is pretty decent. It was clean, quiet for the most part, and of course all were respectful.
