I think the british RAF has better stats when it comes to dog fighting etc than the US Airforce, look at the falklands for example...
I believe that the Falklands was actually mostly the work of the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm ... but very good point nevertheless, I believe they downed over 50 Argentinian aircraft and helicopters for the loss of less then a dozen RAF and RAN FAA aircraft.
Yes, i'm talking about in technology and in the amount of troops.
India China And Russia just formed a Defacto Military industrial complex of thier own. With China having the worlds largest military force, India having the second largest Navy and Russia having just about every one of our great and grand military technologys countered entirely they also have the Vacuum bomb something we cannot even kind of counter.
You can argue till your final days about who has the "best" army but it means little. Arguably the Germans had one of the strongest armies in the days before WWII, but they still lost (luckily). The U.S. was quite strong but we didn't win in Vietnam, nor did the Soviets win in Afghanistan. Going back in history, bad weather lead to the demise of the Spanish Armada. The best of armies can still lose, and weak militia and guerilla groups can win against said armies. War is always a toss of the coin as to who wins.
The only true winner of war are the competing multi national/military industrial complexes we americans seem to almost worship.
No doubt that the USA has the strongest by far.The gap has gotten large rather than smaller in recent years.Looking at war like Vietnam really has to be look at as to the objective. Afterall we never invaded north vietnam but wanted a settlement.Since WWII we have not seen a all out war by a major military power;there has always been restrictions on the goal.
I feel this tread should be completely revamped...The question is...What makes a military the most powerful? What factors can cause your anticipated #1 fall to #2 or below? How can the your anticipated #10 rise to the #1?
china has more manpower, however in recent years their economy has shifted to a production based one, instead of a military focused economy. In addition their fighter planes are substantially outdated, as well as most of their other weaponry. The russians have a large military, however their economy has not flourished in any comparison to the U.S. economy. Russian weaponry is not nearly advanced as America's either. The U.S. military dwarves the other army's of the world with a defense budget that is over 550 billion dollars greater than it's closest competitor(britain) The U.S. has also aquired military bases throughout the globe. Some of these have missle defense S.H.I.E.L.D's , which can supposedly stop nuclear weapons. BOTTOM LINE: U.S. = MOST ADVANCED, MOST FUNDING, AND MOST CAPABLE.
What most of the mentioned countries don't have is an armed and knowledgeable civilian force. If the U.S. were ever invaded, the invaders would have to worry about U.S. civilians just as much as our military.
