I'm a little slow getting started this year.
Last year was my first year, and like a ditz, I got things like donuts, cakes, and pop donated for our local VA Outpatient Clinic. I was mortified to find out that although Vets are ALWAYS very gracious that many of the Vets had to turn down the food and pop, due to being diabetic or some other health reason. (I feel guilty that they got left out!)
Later in the year we did fruit and found that bananas were the #1 favorite. But offering fruit and bottles of water sounds like we are being cheap with people who have done so much for us. (But believe me, no one Vet has ever made us feel that way. I find Veterans to be the most kind, respectful, appreciative group of people I have EVER had the pleasure to be around!)
I know that kids can make valentines but last year I called teachers, with the blessing of their Principals, but none ever bothered to return my calls.
I'm trying to think of a human interest story to get it in the paper before that week, to try to get some support. (The guy who is assigned to the military section of the military section of the paper said we need to give him a story, instead of "Hey, we need some help to do this up right".)
My questions are:- What would be good to serve? (They already have available daily coffee, popcorn and peanuts.)
- If you were at the VA clinic in my area, what would you like see?
- Any ideas on a story?
