My son is on a ship named after the First Marines Division breakout from the communist government during the North Korean war.
It was in 1950 though.
He is on the USS Chosin...the war dragon.
We need to remember these times!!
Those serving on his ship are called, "The Chosin Few"......catchy
I served with an RMC on the USS W H Standley who had been on the Pueblo. I still remember the guy who taught us at SERE who had been there, too. "The Hawaiian good luck sign"
Oh, yea. When I was in Radioman school, we used many real-life events to train for rescues and what not-to-do. The Pueblo gave us a ton of information as to disposing sensitive material. In actuality, the crew of the USS Pueblo were victims of the John Walker espionage disaster that came to light in the 1980s. Had to do with some of the equipment they had onboard. Unfortunately, the proud ship (still commissioned) is a tourist attraction in North Korea.
Wow...my dad had retired from the AF and I remember him getting a call early one morning that told him he was being recalled to Active Duty because the Pueblo was seized.
I remember watching the video of the poor crew members and Commander "showing" where they were when they were seized on the map, as the N. Koreans made them tape using his "shooting the bird" finger to indicate the duress.
Dang...hard to believe it has been so many years....
