I been in the Air Force for almost 10 years now. I am jet troop (aircraft engine mechanic). But my husband and I are ready to move on. We have been stationed in Washington for 7 years and its not our favorite place to say the least. Not a bad area just ready for a change. ANyway they are pretty much throwing TI duty into everyone's lap so I m trying to find some insight on this. If anyway can help me out let me knw what its like I would greatly appreciate it. Not really worried about moving to Texas. We know the area and what not pretty good because of friends we have down there, just need to know what the job is like.

Look on the Air Force Portal. There is a permissive TDY opportunity called "MTI Shadow Duty." Basically, you come to San Antonio for three days and shadow a TI to see if it's for you.

TI's get an extra $400 a month, but that's because they work LONG LONG LONG hours. You have to want to do it for the sake of being a TI, and not for the move or you will resent you 18 hour work days during Week 1.

I love living in San Antonio, and I know about 15 MTI's. All of them love the job and say it is so rewarding.

GREAT post, Dmarie123! The "MTI Shadow Duty" is a GREAT idea; wish they'd had it back when I was still on active duty! MTI, no doubt, is one of the most rewarding AFSCs we have (but certainly not the easiest...)

I know there is a severe shortage of MTI's right now. Some TDY tasking came down for prior MTI's to pull six months duty at Lackland. A friend of mine just got assigned here at Hanscom, he was a TI. He worked long hours with very little sleep or time to himself. You have a tremendous amount of responsibility and it's the type of job you should only take if you really want to dedicate your life to that line of work, it's not the type of job you should consider just for a change of scenery.

Have you considered being a PME instructor? Several bases around the AF have openings. It's a lot less demanding.

Recruiting is another option for you, but again, it's long hours and high stress if you don't make your quota's, but it's not as rigidly structered as being an MTI. In today's economy though, I don't think you'll have too much trouble meeting quota's as a recruiter. Good luck with your decision.

Mrsrr, what about being a Courier? (Special Duty assignment) Yes, it involves a fair amount of travel, but, from what I understand, it is one of the better special duties. My boss is a retired CMSgt and he loved his time doing it. Best of luck!
