traveling to yokosuka japan
Hello. I will be traveling to Yokosuka Japan to visit my son and daughter-in-law, at the end of April. Neither one of them will be able to meet myself, and my two youngest sons, ages 20 and 18, at Narita airport. I've heard that I can take a train from Narita, to Yokosuka, without transferring. Does anyone know if that's true, or is there a better way of getting to Yokosuka. Even though I'm the wife of a retired Navy man, I cannot take the navy shuttle because my sponsor (my son) will not be with me. I'm trying to look at this as an adventure, but am getting very nervous about this. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance....citymouse22

I just returned from Yokosuka and no, you can not take the train without transfering. Your son can arrange with MWR for a bus shuttle transfer. It normally costs 150 a person. Your son can try to get you on the DOD bus thru CFAT if it is not full. He can email them and set it up or inquire about setting it up at PSD. It is an adventure if you haven't been there before. Let me know your plans and I can walk you thru it. I took a cab back to Narita from Yokosuka because dependents were leaving at the same time and I would have been bumped.

You will need to transfer, but you don't need to be nervous, japanese will be helpful and you dont need to worry about crime in japan either

LOL..only if you have someone write where you are going in Japanese. MY cab driver last weekend did not speak english and I certainly do not speak Japanese. The hotel wrote everything down for me in Japanese to give to him.
If you get off at the wrong train stop, you have to buy an additional ticket to get on the right train.

Most the signs and websites for JR and Metro are in English, plan ahead and make a "cheat sheet" that can walk you through.
Just looking real fast, I think you can take the Narita Express (Nex) to Shinagawa then take the Yokosuka Line (might be express) on the Sobu (I think)...Two trains, Green and Blue...Easy!
(I promise easier then you think)
Most of the police stations (Koban) also double as information booths since they have no crime to fight, they can be helpful when they feel inclined.
The cabs, English?....well thats another story and at ¥710 a Km, will cost you a fortune.
I do all that I can to avoid cabs.
Good luck and enjoy the adventure. Japan is quite safe, so its not like trying to get a transfer on an Afghan railway.

I totally agree that Japan is safe. To be honest, the only crimes I saw where police were involved, involved americans....go figure. You will at least have your older sons with you, I traveled alone. I'm an avid believer in going from point A to point B direct, until I have been somewhere more than once.

Hello to all those who responded to my question. I have signed up for the navy bus from Narita to Yokosuka. Chances are we will be bumped, so I've resorted to gathering all the information I can to trying to understand how to take the train to Yokosuka. Still confusing, but hopefully we'll make it. I have a few more questions now to those who can help. We'll be coming over during Golden week, which I heard is an awful time to visit. I wanted to take my sons to see the Yokohoma Bay stars. Is it hard to get tickets to the game? Also, is there a way to take a train to Tokyo, with reserved seating, so that your not shoved in the train like a sardine? Thanks in advance.....

It's harder to get bumped leaving the airport versus going to the airport. Many dependents have already left, due to the ships underways. I do not know what time you are flying into Narita, but I got in at 1300 from Oahu and took the 1530 bus. There is also a 1900 bus that leaves and the 1 1/2 hour ride is quite interesting and the buses are very comfortable. You don't want to take a train with all your luggage.
Also, your son should be able to get tickets for the game and I'm sure your hotel can help you as well. They are very helpful people.

Commander Fleet Activities Yokosuka (CFAY)
Arriving in Japan
If you are arriving at Yokota Air Force Base via an Air Mobility Command (AMC) flight:
AMC flights from the U.S. arrive at Yokota Air Force Base several days a week. Whenever an inbound flight is scheduled, Navy buses are assigned to transport passengers to Yokosuka Naval Base. During peak PCS seasons, when additional AMC flights may be scheduled, additional bus transportation is provided.
A more exciting alternative is to take the train from Narita to Yokosuka (about 3 hours). Both the Keisei/Keihin Kyuko Line and Yokosuka JR Line have trains leaving from the basement of both Terminals No. 1 & No. 2. The cost varies between ¥2000 - ¥4000 (approx. $20-40)* depending on the line and class of fare purchased. If you miss the Navy buses...this is the best way to get down to the base.

DO NOT get on the first 4 box cars of the DIRECT train to Yokosuka because they get detached at Zushi
