The cold weather goes without saying. The people were very very rude and to top it off there was nothing to do, absolutely nothing. 7 very long years.

Jbub22, the "urban legend" I heard for YEARS was: There's a sign at the main gate as you enter the base that says: GRAND FORKS IS GREAT! -By Order of the Base Commander.

I would not doubt it. But I can confirm suicides, DUI's and domestics were always high.

Two, actually. Fort Bliss, Texas and Fort Hood, Texas.

Why? They were both in Texas!

Wow. I went on Eustis one time, not really impressed but i had no idea it was like that.

My close friend is stationed at Bolling AFB. I have no idea how he takes it. Bolling is right next to one of Washington DC's worst neighborhoods. He's even heard of people getting shot up not even one mile from the gate. Plus he has a school-age daughter. Any family there has to know that DC has the worst public school system in the country.

Satellite Communications (SATCOM), where the frequencies were so secret, nobody else used them. We stood 12 hour shifts listening to static because we were the only ones on our channel. Couldn't leave, eat, read, put your feet up, use the phone, have visitors, listen to anything else (radio, TV)... Just sit in a 6'X10' room with a table, chair, and a radio that nobody will ever use. 2 years of that, I still have nightmares.

Now my command was ok, but due to the city it just brought everything down and was just a drag to live there.
In the USAF, AGR (basically a stable job where you never PCS) slots commonly go unfilled.

LZ Hawk Hill, north of Chu Lai South Vietnam. We lived underground, like rats, and had to frequently leave the place and let people try to kill us. What a bummer of a post!

But, on a lighter note, I once spent a few weeks at Ft. Chaffee, AR TDY. What a dump!
