My 22 yr old daughter just shared the funniest story with me. This really happened.
One of my girl's good friend's (male of course) has a 4 yr old daughter. The guy is in the Navy and had to come back from deployment to take care of his daughter as his wife left and the daughter had been placed in foster care. He didn't know about it, as soon as he found out he was able to get his C.O. to help him get stateside. Now dad has been deployed since the child was an infant so doesn't have a lot of experience with kids, but they are together now and doing well. Needless to say, there are a few issues with the little girl and trust.
So...while at daycare, the little one was shown a movie that scared the pants off her. She woke up several nights in a row screaming and to the point where the dad would call my daughter over to calm the child. The 4th night, she spent the night along with her boyfriend and several others.
This night when the child woke up screaming, my daughter carried the child from the room. Dad and a couple of his buddies were outside the room with their fatigues on, knives in sheaths and pellet guns at hand. <giggles>
The men "stormed" the room, tossing the mattress over, banging into the walls and generally making a mess. After several minutes, they came out of the room. The dad walked up to his daughter. Dad took his daughter, walked back into the room and told her, "It's ok honey, we got the monsters." They guys straightened the room and put the child back to bed.
While a heartwarming story, I've heard it told in many different contexts before.
Just a note... active duty single parents cannot retain full custody (or physical custody) of their children, under the age of 15. Even then, they need special waivers, parenting plans and non-deployable orders.
I do know that he is having to jump through a lot of hoops at the moment. I don't personally know all the details, but from what my girl says keeping the child is not going to be easy for him.
I'm going to have to keep that in mind if my daughter does the same thing
