Any American Military Living or Moving to Naples, Italy? (Army, AFR, Navy)

The military is possibly moving us to Naples Italy. Can anyone tell me what it's like living on base housing? If it's safe to start a family there and all around experience? Thanks!

You HAVE to live *on base*, or can you live on the economy ?
If you are adventurous, try to live *off base*.

Like crime or medically ?. I assume you mean having a little one, by *starting a family* ? If there are more families there, you should be OK, medically. Naples however is rather big, so a good hospital should be available.

- Keep an open mind
- Never talk about *at home this better, that better* ...
- Show a genuine interest in the local people.
- Try to learn the language, ask how it is pronounced.
- Keep a smile on your face always !!!
- If you are allowed off base housing, make friends with the local people,
and invite them to your home.
- If you take pics of you AND the locals, share the pics with them later.

Just remember who you represent.
You are the guest in their country, so behave like one.
It is up to you, how and what the local people will classify you as.

We were stationed there for my last tour of duty before retiring [1997 - 2001].

They were just building Aversa.

There is some housing on-base, but it is Navy, so they only plan on providing maybe 20% of the total housing need. The rest goes off-base. That is just the Navy mindset, unlike the Army or AF.

There are a bunch of large apartment complexes, contracted by the Navy. So you can be off-base, and yet live within a walled community of Americans / Brits. They change all the time, so the complexes I saw would be different today.

Before you go, I do recommend that you make a list of every place you wish to visit.

We did. Like: Egypt, Israel, Africa, Greece, Germany, Paris, ... Then when you get there go to MWR and check out there deals. You get 30 days paid leave every year. I did a month in Israel touring archaeological sites. I did 2 weeks on a paddleboat on the Nile stopping each day to tour Egyptian museums. I did a week skiing the Matterhorn [the ski resort straddles a national border, at the top you can ski down one side into Cervinia Italy, or down the over side into Zermatt Switzerland]. My Dw drove 4 times from Naples to Paris France. It is very close to Rome, so every friend who came to visit us, we drove up to Rome for the day.

If there is any place in Europe, North Africa, or near Asia that you wish to tour, it is close by and available.

From Naples it is a short drive to Bari and the car ferries there will take you to Greece, or the Greek islands.

We lived in Naples in the mid 90's, LOVED IT.

We lived on the economy for a year, and then 2 in off-base housing. Both were nice.

I had my 2nd child there at the Naval Hosp and it was fine, no better or worse than my first in Fla.

We did get robbed, our house and car were broken into in seperate occasions. By the time we left, I'd guess every single American I knew had been robbed in some way or another. Totally worth it though.

Great food, beautiful scenery, history!, fascinating arcitechure, bazaars, gypsies... we'd love to go back.
