Just got word that my son recieved his orders, and as of this summer he will be stationed back here in Michigan. He will be stationed about 8 hours from us, but that is better than an 8-day drive from us! This means my window of opportunity is rapidly closing to see Alaska, but hey,........ I can live with that disappointment if it means having my family together again. Just wanted to share!
Michigan...Alaska...familiar with them both. I grew up in Western Michigan and currently live in Alaska. Having family near is cause for celebration, and good on your son for his service to our country, MICoastieMom!
GREAT news, MICoastiemom! Mmm, I'm not sure the Alaska window will ever close; son can always take you on a guided tour from MI. Or, maybe he'll get another set of orders to return to AK with his next promotion...
Oh, Crew Chief, now that he is back on his beloved Lake Superior, I don't think they could pry him away with a crowbar! It would have to be one heck of a promotion! And I didn't tell you the best part. His cutter is being decommisioned, so he will be part of the crew that sails it down the West Coast, through the Panama Canel, and up the Atlantic Seaboard where it will go to its new owners. How cool is that?!? I told him don't even think of showing up in the lower peninsula unless you have pictures!
I'm guessing that the last cruise on his decommissioned cutter may be an awesome but bitter-sweet; the USCG equivalent of your jet being transferred... At least it'll be a nice finis trip! I've lasways wanted to see the Panama Canal; one of these days! Well, glad he's coming home!
Great news for you! 8 hours can be done in a day, which means you will get to see him more often and it won't cost as much money. And it sounds like he is happy to be moving back and has a pretty neat task to do along the way.
That's great news!!! I have been fortunate enough to have my Marine son stationed in southern Cali for his entire 8 years so far, and that is only a 2.5 hour flight away, and drivable, too. I've got two daughters that are getting ready to ship to Army Basic, and I am so anxious to see where everybody ends up (hubby and I included - we are expecting orders soon).
Congrats! I know you are thrilled!!!
