Ever since the first tanks came out in WW1 there were people who predicted that the era of tanks were over because its so much cheaper to build an anti tank gun and anti tank guns have gotten progressively more powerful over the years(as have all weaponry). But as anti tank guns get more powerful they just add more protective armour to tanks. So no, tanks arn't out of the picture by a long shot. A real formidable weapon.
i thought i already gave my two cents here, but apparently i didn't.
as an infantryman for the usmc, i can't tell you how nice it was to have tanks rolling alongside our units in iraq. when we were clearing neighborhoods for the army in ramadi, those tanks were heavensent; it was like having a mobile bunker that you could set up on any corner, any street, and let the enemy snipers and mortar teams cower in their holes, knowing that if they were dumb enough to poke their heads out, more than 5.56mm and 7.62mm rounds were gonna come their way.
we always carried rockets, grenades, and other things with which to get at insurgents sealed in little holes, but those tank main guns pack a lot more of a punch, both in physical warfare and psychological warfare. them, the army's bradleys, and the gators turned ramadi into a cake-walk where we pretty much just got to go meet the neighbors. it was awesome.

So far as I'm concerned, this post settles the question once and for all.
As an old grunt myself, I'm of the opinion that anything which helps the Infantry is alright with me.
