My daughter called today with her new orders: Youngsan Korea. I tried to google it but feel lost.

Anyone ever been stationed there? What was it like? Any tips or tricks 'before' she goes that she should know or do?

Yongsan is in the middle of Seoul; which is a huge city. It is the headquarters for the American military in Korea.

It isn't large as bases go but has all the support facilities needed to be comfortable.

I always felt safe there and was treated with repect.

PS: Korea isn't like Mash on TV; Korea now is an industrial giant with a high standard of living.

If she is single, just jump on the plane and go. They have everything you need... Just enjoy the tour...

Like Balad1 said it is in the middle of Seoul. I was sationed there 72/73, 84/85 and TDY a few times after that. They had the Olympics there in '88. The Army web site there: http://yongsan.korea.army.mil/

I would not mind going back. The winters are a bit extreme for me.

Some good youtube videos of Youngan: http://www.youtube.com/results?searc...snum=0&spell=1

Youngsan is slowing scaling back, with a plan to eventually move everything to Camp Humpreys which is near Osan Air Base. She should enjoy her assignment.

Hey, I think they invented the "Mink Blankets" there. The 1984 versions I bought are still good. My 40+ son still has his original one. He kicks girlfriends out but he said "I ain't getting rid of my binky my dad brough for me in Korea".

Yep, still got my mink blanket, too! (Kunsan; '79-'80) All the knockoff shoes I bought have LONG since worn out, though...
