Wearing Medals or Ribbons On Civilian Clothes

I've seen photos of old soviet vets wearing medals on the suit coats,but haven't seen anyone here doing it. My father was buried in his Chief's uniform, with the ribbons attached,but he never wore any medals or ribbons any place,not even on Vetran's Day.

That's very unusual, like you the only place I have seen this is at Memorial Day and Veterans Day ceremonies. I have also heard it was once popular at formal events (weddings and the like) for veterans to wear their miniature medals on civilian formal clothing.

There might be some allowances or perhaps in a limited environment, one might not care of any consequences.

At my father's funeral, the priest who had been on destroyers before he was ordained wore his ribbons/awards on his robes.
