Thanks, Black Shoe! My dad had a "cruise book" (whatever the yearbook-like book documenting a ship's cruise is called) featuring the "shellback" induction. This was back in the '60s and the pictures I saw bring back the phrase: "You had to be there to understand"...
And, direct from the Chow Hall (er, "Dining Facility"...) don't forget "SOS"! that would be "Stuff on a Shingle" (or a word sorta like "stuff"...) That's chipped beef on toast. Which, if properly prepared, tastes mighty good, IMHO.
