Hi folks. I wanted to let folks know about a program that is out there for our military, civilian employees affected by the 2005 BRAC decision, wounded, ill and injured military members, and surviving spouses. It is administered by the Army Corps of Engineers and today I attended my second briefing on the program.
In short, it is called the Homeowner's Assistance Program (HAP for short) and while it has always been around in some form, the stimulus plan last year expanded it to include many more folks. Here is a link that will give you more information -
Homeowners' Assistance Program - Department of Defense.
If you must sell your home due to a PCS move and if you meet the criteria (which are covered in the law) the government will cover a portion of your losses, to include paying off the mortgage if you are upside-down. Again, there are several criteria to qualify, but the main one is that you must have been in a ratified contract prior to July 1, 2006.
It seems as if very few folks have heard about this program, so I am trying to everything I can to get the word out. The first briefing I went to predicted the government would only have enough funds to cover the program through the spring of 2011, so please spread the word!
