Once you sign up for the military(marines), how long is it before you go to bootcamp.

There is no set period of time. You might have to wait for a school, which means you might have to wait a month or even more.

There are other steps you have to go through before you take the oath.

Have you gone to see a recruiter? If not, I would talk to them all...

I was told that the recruiter said 5 months. Does that sound right?

That very well could be true. But it might be more, it might be less. Don't wait for the last minute and then expect to get in right away. You need to start planning in advance...

As Poncho said, it depends, mostly on the MOS you choose. Some jobs will be open now, others not for months. As an example, my daughter is going Army. It's pretty much the same with the Marines, but she went to MEPS in April and does not ship until the end of August. Another person who was there with her got a different job and ships in June. The Marines are the same way.

Go talk to a recruiter!

Actually in the Marine Corps, it has more to do with shipping first and jobs section. Meaning, 1st off, you DEP in and get your ship date, secondly, u pick your job while in the DEP based on your scores and waht jobs are available around your ship time. My station, we are shipping as far as 11 months out.

That said, that 5 months might simply exist b/c someone that was shipping that date discharged from the pool. With the first being next week, it's possible that when you finally make it to MEPs the ship date is even farther out. While you're in the DEP there may be opportunities to ship earlier to replace someone who is not going to bootcamp.

I am a Marine on recruiting duty. Feel free to ask me any questions.
