Question Very upset over the $95 fee for license plate renewal. Does anyone else in the country pay so much?

Hello everyone,

I'm so upset. I know this fee has been around for a while. It's just that our economy is so bad, and I feel we in Wisconsin need a break. My friend lives in Georgia, and I know she doesn't pay this much. My question is "What does this high fee pay for?" I feel like I'm getting ripped off. What about you?

Why do you have to pay $95? My renewal (for a basic passenger car) was $75.

I think the city of Milwaukee has an additional $20 wheel tax?

Vehicle registration in Nevada can run several hundred dollars depending on the year and make of the car. Of course this is offset by having no state income tax. I am not 100% sure but I think it is far more expensive in Florida too.

Thank you for your responses. Quijote...I was under the assumption that everyone paid $95. How do you get to pay $75?

Yes, I didn't know this last year and waited 2 months for them to send me my stickers...finally I called and they told me I was $20 short. Make sure you send the right amount, lol

IL raised rate last year to $95 or $99 (I can't remember).
It was $79 before "the economic crisis"

Also many towns here have a wheel tax of $25-30 and I think Chicago is much higher.

Friends in Indiana and Colorado pay annually in the hundreds, depending on car value.

Well you deserve the politicians you elect. I have looked into registering my car in Louisiana to avoid paying such a high price.

In Georgia, you pay the ad valorem tax. Instead of paying $95 to renew the plate, you get to pay $20 tag fee PLUS $205 in taxes (based on a 2007 Toyota Corolla) if you an Atlanta resident.

Illinois charges $92/ year as of 1/1/10.

VA, NV, among others have personal property taxes.

Wisconsin doesn't sound all that bad.

Just so long as you're happy. Maybe we could shoot for first place and have registration be 200 a year! Meanwhile our roads are comparable to Iraq! or as the state last evaluated them in a report our roads received a D.
