COMPLETELY manageable... especially if you're you're single w/ no kids. If you have kids it may be different, but even then I wouldn't worry too much.

Yes there are plenty of affordable homes in Milwaukee and even some suburbs such as Butler, ST. Francis, South Milwaukee, West Allis and Greenfield.

Do you have much debt, such as a car loan, student loans, credit card, etc? Otherwise you could manage on 40k, assuming your debt free or at least close.

Milwaukee budget with no large debt included(credit card, student or large auto loan)

Rent 700
Food 600
Utilities 125
Auto/Gas/Insurance 500
Taxes/SS 550
Clothes 100
Entertainment 100
Health Insurance 200 Assume - out of pocket with typical teacher plan
Misc 200

Total 2875

Gross pay per month 3300

You'll be O.K. assuming you don't have any big student loans or credit card debt, otherwise it might be tight.

You can make it on that much money in Milwaukee. Cost of living isn't extremely high. However, the Milwaukee public school system is generally regarded as being terrible.

If your on a 40K budget, consider the third ward out. But yes, Milwaukee on 40K is very do-able, in fact thats gotta be pretty close to the average salary around here.
