Default Bye bye MKE, Hello AZ

Well, this is it. In around four hours I'm going to fire up the trusty eclipse and head for Phoenix. I'm going to be there for 6 months or I may end up staying there, I'm leaving my options open.

This isn't one of those wow I'm glad I'm leaving threads. I'm actually a little sad as over the last few days I have come to understand how much I do like it here despite the 22 winters I have survived. It really is a great city that doesn't get enough attention and is all too often looked down upon. Plus I'm going to miss Summerfest .

Everyone please have a Miller for me and cook up some brats. Be proud of your city, it might seem lackluster, but it does have many things going for it.

Well, you picked the right time of year to move to Phoenix, that's all I can say.

When you get to Phoenix keep in mind that it's not an eastern city like Milwaukee. You are probably familiar with it already, but it's spread out and different. Milwaukee definitely has a lot of things going for it, one of which is not the weather.

Well to be honest I have never been to Phoenix in my life but I'm going to be living in Tempe literally a half block from ASU, so I'm hoping it's somewhat like Brady St/ East Side.

And the only thing that would keep me from coming back is one thing, the weather. I wouldn't change much about MKE besides the winters. The cold isn't even so bad but I'd like to see the sun once in a while, it makes a big difference to me.

45 Minutes and I'm outta here on an epic road trip.

Good Luck! Lucky You! I too love Milwaukee but would rather live somewhere warm instead of here.

If you happen to be browsing the forum while on the road (not that I'm condoning that while driving or anything), unless you are driving through Denver and winding down through Colorado to Santa Fe, then down through Albuquerque, and over to Flagstaff via I-40, you are going to have one hell of a boring drive until you get to New Mexico.

As far as Tempe goes, the area you are going to be living in is definitely somewhat like the East Side. It's a good area if you like activity. The typical amenities are close, Tempe Town Lake is nice, Whole Foods is just off of the 60 on Rural (not sure if you are a Whole Foods person). Shopping is close. The light rail runs through downtown Tempe, handy if you have to go to the airport and don't want to leave your car in parking. You'll find your way around quickly. Enjoy the trip, and when you get to Arizona, don't ever drink and drive. Unlike Wisconsin's slap on the wrist, the laws here are extremely strict, mandatory jail time first offense.

Finally, take the time, if possible, to look around some of the area. Much of Phoenix is suburban. Think Waukesha and Ozaukee Counties. Lots of amenities, but not that walkable. Downtown is doing pretty well and the areas along the light rail are nice (I live near the light rail downtown).

One last thing--I vaguely remember that you don't like slowpokes hogging the left lane, which is a chronic issue in Milwaukee. It's not too bad here, and most of the freeways are 65... but 85 is a criminal offense, even where the limit is 75.

Anyway have a fun trip, I'm somewhat envious.

Are you sure you're local? I'd rather have a Sprecher or a Riverwest Stein

Forreal tho... hope everything works out for you in AZ.

Yeah the drive was super boring until New Mexico. Tonto national forest is beautiful and has the most fun roads I have ever driven.

Tempe is awesome and its kind of like Brady st only it has more chain bars and restaurants...And the girls running around in their summer clothes. I think im gonna like it here.

I'm not going to mention the weather.

Glad to hear the drive went well. You must have exited I-40 at Winslow or Holbrook and driven down to Payson and then Phoenix on the 87. Good choice! I don't think it's any faster than taking the 40 to Flagstaff, but it's much more interesting than taking the 40 to Flagstaff and the 17 to Phoenix.
