Any thoughts on the area in the western part of Milwaukee centered around Hawley between the 94 and National? I will be moving to Milwaukee from out of state to go to school at the Medical College in the dall, and was hoping for a decently-priced 1 bedroom apt. This area seems to be reasonably priced than the places closer to MCW and doesn't seem like it would be too long of a commute. I was just wondering if anyone knew what the neighborhood was like and if it's a safe area. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I like that area, depending where you live you could be in Wauwatosa or as we locals call it "Tosa". I would prefer to stay north of 94 and anywhere close to Bluemound or Wisconsin just due to the type of homes available there. Crime not an issue there however standard big city cautions go into play. Use google street view to see about areas you like and if you have a more specific area just ask.

Are you coming from California? I noticed you wrote "the 94".

Milwaukee City, thanks for the advice. I definitely have been taking advantage of the Street View feature.

Rogee, yup, coming from southern California. LOL! I do suppose the "the" gives that away.

Well, it's not the best and not the worst. It is a tad closer to some bad areas than you might want to be, and I know there are more problems around there than areas further to the west. Essentially, the further west you go the better. For a still reasonably priced area, and "better," consider West Allis, west of 70th St. Northern part of West Allis (just south of 94) affords excellent accessibility to MCW.
Always be careful of the advice you might get on forums like this. People will say an area "isn't that bad" or whatever, but their perspective may be skewed by not having young children, or maybe having moved to that area from an even worse area, etc. With a non-citizen (European), non-streetwise wife and having daughters, I always played things very carefully as far as neighborhoods, schools, etc.
PM me if you want unvarnished truth about various MKE neighborhoods and/or suburbs. I am native Californian, but moved here from a different state 15 years ago. I believe I know the area pretty well for a non-native.
