Default Neighborhoods with older, nice homes in Milwaukee & Suburbs

After much research in regards to relocating to the midwest with Milwaukee, Detroit & Minneapolis as our choices...we have decided on Milwaukee! We are looking for an older home in an established neighborhood with well kept yards. My husband will be working out of our home and only needs to be within an hour of the airport, so suburbs & surrounding counties would be ok as well. Our price range is 250K-325K. We are not looking for anything huge, but do need a minimum of 1500 sq ft with a basement. Looking for recommendations of good neighborhood with good schools as we have an 11 year old. I have tried to sift through the posts to find this info but my head is spinning! Any help would be greatly appreciated. If I have left out anything re: my request, just let me know. Thank you!

I would check out Greendale. It's near the airport and I've heard it described as historic and quaint by it's residents. I have heard concern for property taxes in Milwaukee suburbs like Greendale however.

Here are some city-data forums discussing all this:

Good luck!

Taxes are an issue in Milwaukee County as a whole. Maybe further north in Mequon (Ozaukee County) would be good, but I don't think the housing stock is as plentiful. If property taxes are not a concern, you can find some awesome older homes in Wauwatosa, Shorewood, Whitefish Bay, Fox Point and to a lesser extent, Bayside. I'm not too familiar with the southern half of the county so I can't recommend anything but the above.

The Milwaukee area has a lot to choose from for nice older houses. There are a lot of newer developments, but it isn't completely overrun with that sort of thing to the extent of other places I've lived.
Greendale is excellent and the older houses usually go for quite a bit less than your budget. Unfortunately, they don't have basements. Not sure I'd want a basement in many parts of this area anyway. There are several hilly places away from water, but much of it isn't. Just something to keep in mind.
I like what I've seen of Wauwatosa as well. It's seems a bit more upscale.
The Bay View neighborhood in Milwaukee is cool. It's next to Lake Michigan south of downtown.

I would suggest the Lake Country area. There are plenty of homes in that price range with nice yards and basements. Also about 45 minutes from the airport.

What designates the Lake Country Area or what are the boundaries? Thanks.

East towne tosa for small lots an darling bungalows, a little further west for huge victorians.
Lake county is great but I wouldn't want to daily commute from there to the airport, just 94/83 to brookfield can be half an hour.
94/83 and 94/C are the two highway exits for lake country, it goes north (ritzy) and south, less ritzy, from there.

Hi, welcome to Milwaukee.

There are many options for older, well-kept homes in the North Shore. Generally, if a good school district is your concern, this would include Shorewood north to Mequon. There are many options in your price range and all of those communities have very good schools.

You'll also be close to Downtown for dining out/entertainment plus there's alot of retail in the north shore. I would recommend taking Lincoln Memorial Drive to 794 straight to the airport for your husband. A couple years ago I worked less than a mile from the airport and it was an easy commute with a great view of Lake Michigan the entire way.

Good luck on your search!

It's an area in Northwestern Waukesha County. Basically the area from Pewaukee in the East to Oconomowoc in the West. You can find the kind of houses in the price range you're looking for throughout the whole area.
