If you build it, they will come?

I'm doubtful that making more education available, would mean that everyone would automatically show up and take it seriously. A few more people, perhaps, but not many. High school is already shunned. Why would a mandatory higher education be any different? Education is already available for nothing, through high school. In my opinion, the premise of feel-good dollars being tossed at a symptom, is not going to solve much, if it solves anything.

The problem, is repopulating the country in 15 year "generations". I don't see how kids of kids, are going to suddenly realize out of the blue, that going to school for what seems an endless amount of time, will result in a positive outcome. If we fix the problem, we won't have to spend many more times the money and time, to fix the symptom.

It's probably fair to say there are more who are not interested in getting a good education than those who are. Let's talk about those who are high academic achievers.

White kids from the suburbs grow up sheltered. They have few if any obstacles in their path. They don't have to learn to respect or get to know the intricacies and perculiarities of other races with the exception of some asian and indians. More than likely their parents are together and BOTH gainfully employed for life. Their parents went to college as did their grandparents. These spoiled kids never go without. All the resources they need are at their disposal. Their parents can afford to buy them laptops, equipped with the latest technology and provide high speed internet. Their schools are well-equipped and well-funded. They are the priority and they know it! These brats never face any form of discrimination and just cruise through their existence, thinking that they hit a home run when in reality "they were born on third base." All their teachers look like them. All the books they read have pictures of people who look like them. They look at TV, and every program or ad is centered around people who look like them. They go to the grocery store, the mall, the doctor's office, and every magazine cover features somebody who looks like them. They cruise into Marquette, a place for them. Just after midnight on Saturday morning, after yet another Friday night drinking binge, you will find many of these girls doing such things as: vomiting on the dorm room wall, urinating in the alley, spitting, farting and belching loudly, fighting, yelling, screaming, cursing, crying, vandalizing, trashing the streets, stealing, and yes, sleeping with total strangers and each other. The guys are equally as bad. Many of these girls have been forbidden to associate with black men, but they frequently throw themselves at them in secrecy during floor parties while the lights are turned low and everybody is drunk. In the morning when they realize that they slept with a black man, they are deeply ashamed, bordering on mental disturbance. Their true nature? They get through college with the utmost of support in the most accomodating of environments. They're accustomed to studying and doing so in college is just an extension of what they did in high school. Life is easier for them, no worries. Later in life, you find the women in therapy because they can't cope and the men struggling through divorce and mid-life crisis.

Black people are a proud people. Dynamic, explosive, intense, talented, intellectual, self-abusing, enraged, exceptionally humorous and entertaining, compassionate, sensitive, supremely gifted athletically, insightful, perceptive, and exceptionally creative are some of the words and phrases I would use to characterize black people. If more would refocus, this society would be transformed. However, a black person who gains high academic achievement has to work harder than the white counterpart. It's likely that he or she comes from a broken home. This person watched his parents try to maintain their dignity even as doors closed for them due to racial discrimination by the multitude of ignorant whites who exist in the industry. It is infuritating to witness the injustice, especially when you see that it has broken down your parents or caused them discomfort. This doesn't create great hopes for your own future. Almost on faith you have to believe that achieving high academic achievement is going to reward you with the type of opportunities that escaped your parents. You don't have a laptop because your parents can't afford one and the only access you have to the internet is at school. You have to share the connection with 30 other students. Your school is not funded as well as the suburban schools, lending credence to the perception that you are not expected to succeed or go far despite your efforts. It is also more likely that you live in a community that is not safe and you continually live with distractions. Fewer of your classmates are going on to college. Some have lives so stressful and difficult that prison would be a better life. You must deal with people of all races, people who couldn't afford to move to the suburbs. If you overcome these obstacles or those like them and make it into Marquette, you are EXCEPTIONAL. However, the spoiled white kids treat you as though you don't deserve to be there. You are shunned at every turn and treated like an idiot. When required to work in groups, the white kids are condescending. You are isolated, yet proudly and with the greatest of determination, you push on. You have more resolve. When you graduate, you have traveled longer and your road has been harder. You realize that you are simply better. To graduate on the same day with those spoiled brats is internally liberating. If you chose the right major, one that is highly valued by society. It will also be financially and professionally rewarding as well.

So it is not as simple as you say. It is EASIER to get an A in the suburbs. Blacks who have been accepted into Marquette are given a free ride because they are EXCEPTIONAL, and don't you ever forget that. Every black person you see on Marquette's campus today is exceptional. Suffice it to say that admission into the university is only the BEGINNING of another round of problems for the black person! You have to dig deeper, understand the dynamics. Strive to become more sophisticated about such things.
You had some interesting points but many of your personal attacks on the white community left a bitter taste in my mouth. You seem to have quite disdain for white people. Unfortunately, people like will you perpetuate the racism and cynicism in our community. Until people see past skin color and look to a person's soul, we will live segregated and at odds with one another.

I know that what Alexus said may seem pretty offensive. But remember, many minorities, especially blacks, feel demeaned in our society, because often they must deal with people who believe negative generalizations about them (i.e. blacks do not care about getting an education). Due to such stigmas attached to them, minorities are not taken seriously by many in our society because they are not viewed as people with positive values. So, many minorities don't feel wanted in their communities, and act accordingly. As a result, those communities as a whole do not wish to invest in reversing problems that plague minorities, and little progress is made towards this end.

With that in mind, ask yourself if it is so hard to be pessimistic about society. I don't think Alexus meant to offend anyone, but rather illustrate how hard minorities in the inner city must work in order to do well in their communities' schools by comparing them with a white-suburbanite educational experience.

Nevertheless, sweeping generalizations are, most of the time, inaccurate and offensive, so if any were made, you should be angry. Not all whites should not have to answer for racists of their race, just like not all blacks should have to answer for lazy and misguided thugs of their race.

Also, in one of my previous posts, I really should have tried to emphasize the importance of the community over academics. While high-achievement in academics is a viable way to escape poverty, it's not for everyone. By belonging to a strong community, an individual can find social, moral, and spiritual support in whatever endeavors he/she pursues, be it academics or some other calling (as long as it's positive). For me, access to such a community was through my school.

Although the statistic is alarming, compared to other large metropolitan areas, I, personally, would not be too concerned about the ranking. I have been to every state, except Alaska, and I will compare Wisconsin, and Milwaukee's quality of life to anywhere...and most places fall short of what our state offers. A park system next to none, most streets you can eat off of, an education system that consistently ranks near or at the top, fairly clean government and a solid midwestern work ethic.
All city centers have pockets of poverty, but if you look at what our poverty is like here, on a state level, it is extremely low and pales in comparison to other states, especially ones like Georgia, or worse yet, my former state of residence, Mississippi.

Even so, there's still a need to make improvements.

I think if the city could somehow annex some of the suburbs then it would help alot.
1. It would increase the money flow of the city and help bring in some new business to the city.

2. with the added population the cities crime rate would decrease and would lighten up the place.

I got this idea from other cities who developed a way to annex the land around it so no suburbs would decay the city and it really helps.

Two examples are San Antonio and Houston, They constantly annex land so they can absorb the new developments of the metro. This lowers the total crime rate of the city and allows for maximum cash flow so the reap the benefits of the metro.

Now if Milwaukee somehow could annex the surrounding suburbs then it could do the same and improve it's present state.

It could work, but there is a reason alot of residents are moving away from MKE. They don't want to be in Milwaukee. It sounds like a place though.

Default Taking responsibility, leadership

I lived in Milwaukee for 40 years before moving to California 12 years ago, primarily to leave behind the misery of the racial negativity and judgementalism that permeates Milwaukee and its suburbs to the core of their essence. Milwaukee has been racially divided since before bussing was created in an attempt to homogenize the population. I found that white people freaked out, sold their houses under market, and fled to the suburbs because people of a certain ethnicity started moving into their neighborhood. Without a shred of doubt, people of color have been passed over for jobs and have been judged primarily by their ethnicity. Put your foot down! Don't stand for it! Where there is no justice, there is no peace! Demand equal treatment! I have also found countless people of color who have blamed white society for their situation, and have tried to excuse themselves for all their bad lifestyle decisions by claiming they are victims.

Well, life is tough for all people, and by playing the role of victim, you may get some sympathy for a minute, but you will not be a successful leader, and you will just have to resign yourself to living on the crumbs doled out by others, being miserable and complaining about how badly your lot in life is. The way to change your situation is to first take responsibility for yourself and for your decisions. Once you do that, you empower yourself to make changes in your situation and in your life, and you give yourself permission to be successful and happy. I found the "you owe me" mentality to be rampant in the black community in Milwaukee, and it has led to nothing but continued poverty, and lack of leadership to significantly change things. It is a depressing cycle, and that mentality is clearly evident to me whenever I return for visits.

On the bright side, not every place is as racially devisive as Milwaukee (in fact none that I have ever experienced), and in this broader country, people are sized up more and more based on their individual merits and character, and less and less on the color of their skin. But if a person comes across as a defeated victim, they are not likely to be seen as a warrior. People in Milwaukee need to GET OVER it! Stop being so judgemental. Stop overt and defacto discrimination. Take responsibility for yourself and your actions. No one person can change EVERYTHING, but EVERYBODY can do SOMETHING to change their piece of the world for the better.

Personally, during my 40 years in Milwaukee, I found the city to be a depressing, negative, racially biased, encouraging black people to see themselves as victims, and blaming white people for their situation and bad decisions. Sick. All people need to take responsibility for their own actions and make positive things happen. Quit whining; take leadership to achieve your goals. Demand excellence. Make your city leaders accountable. Don't settle for the mediocre. Be the captain of your ship and keep your eye on the destination you want to arrive at. The alternative is to continue blaming everybody and everything for things being so screwed up, and things will remain the same.

I don't really agree with what Alexus said either. It's 2008, most people aren't racist. You pretty much stereotyped blacks and whites. That's just as bad as a white person doing so. Just because I am white does not mean that I am handed everything I want in life.

Many times minorities have it easier these days. If I was one, it would help me out a lot. I'm a firefighter, but not yet full-time. Most places give preference points for minorities. I was in Washington DC a couple weeks ago. I got in line at 1am to hand in my application the next morning. I flew all the way from Milwaukee to do this. Then in line a few guys from the area tell me that they are just there because they live in the area and get preference points. They said its good pay and they don't need school so it should be easy and fun. Then the guy next to me rolls a blunt and asks me to save his spot in line so he can smoke it. Yet, because he's a minority and DC resident, he may get hired over me even though I have experience and have dedicated years to get hired. In St Louis they had a rule that they needed to hire a black person for every white because the Chief wanted to. Funny because white people are minorities there. Same with when I was in LA.

My dad grew up in the Northwest side of Milwaukee for part of his life before moving to the south side. His parents were deaf and extremely poor. His older brothers would be able to study and play sports while he helped work to support the family. He often cut classes just to raise a few extra bucks for his parents. He constantly got picked on for being white. He eventually ended up in Bayview and graduated to become a janitor. He had no money or time for school at first. He eventually got an associate's degree and landed a job with Johnson Controls. Right now he's making over $100k/year because of his hard work. He got offered Vice President positions with large companies that required Master's Degrees even though he only had an Associate's. Recently they sent him back to school and he completed accelerated classes on top of his job to earn his BA with a 3.9GPA. His hard work ethic eventually put him ahead in life. No person should be making excuses for not making it. If you work hard and are a good person, you will make it no matter what race you are or where you grew up.
