I'm sorry, but if your friend made a decision like that without checking out the area first... when driving through there for 5 minutes would've made it obvious they were misinformed... he/she is a f***ing idiot.

You say locals view Milwaukee through rose-colored glasses? I'd love to know what Milwaukee you've dealt with... certainly not the one I've known for 2/3rds of my life... but it's clear that your POV isn't without its own biases. Oh, and great declaration of being TOTALLY NOT RACIST on your original post. Funny how only the most callous bigots in this forum seem to say that. Did I mention that I'm a white guy of Irish extraction who went to high school at Washington (up the street from that oh-so-dreaded Sherman Park!) and NEVER had a problem? Not with the black kids anyway... the only time I got in a fight was with another white kid who thought I was some kind of "race traitor" for not sticking with the other white kids they bussed in from the southside. Good times!

The FACT of the matter is (oooh, you're blood's gonna boil when you hear what I'm about to say ) pretty much any area east of the freeway is perfectly safe. The only exceptions are Riverwest and Walker's Point... and even those are still easy for anyone with a fair amount of urban living experience. Then there's the far Northwest and far Southside, which are nearly indistinguishable from the suburbs they sit next to.

But by all means, if you think Milwaukee is such a sh*thole, then do us all a favor and stay the hell away... or at least stay in those safe, cozy suburbs... although I'd keep in mind that Aurora and Littleton in Colorado were, at one point, thought to be safe little slices of Americana where nothing bad could ever happen. Also, some of us... myself included... rather like the fact that Milwaukee is off-putting to prissy, judgmental snobs. It keeps them in the mind-rotting suburban hells where they belong.

Anyway, back to my lurking

I like the mind rotting suburbs, particularly Ozaukee County. And I'll admit to being racist, if by racist you mean looking at the pure facts and statistics about who commits most crimes and the race of those who commits them... and sex for that matter. One look at cesspools like Gary, IN and Detroit, MI shows me another slice of what happens when these cities end up with predominantly one race running things, granted that can be blamed on outsourcing and the like, but I don't see other more predominantly caucasion areas falling apart in such a spectacular fashion.

It's sad because there are good, law abiding black people that get treated poorly by some when they don't deserve it. Me, I go by a person by person basis in real life, but don't ignore obvious trends and pretend they don't exist, either. I admit to being biased against anyone, black or white, who talks and acts like they are from the ghetto, blaring their rap music though, with pants down to their knees. I guess that makes me a 'culturalist' ... I prefer not to be around these people.
