There are some artsy/hipsters but nothing overwhelming. However there is a large population of minorities and some areas of the city are not safe.
You know what? Stay the hell away from Milwaukee. We've got enough racial tension here without transplants coming in and making the problem worse.

Have a background in selling various sorts of blue collar products like software, warehouse supplies, management and the like. Have a family member who lives in Iowa and she told me that because of the aging population, some companies are having a hard time replacing senior staff and management.

So between Wisconsin and Iowa, what is my better bet?
In Milwaukee and Des Moines, you will be near some hilliness I guess. The Milwaukee area has hills as you go west. I know what you mean by flat as a pancake and it's not that bad. Having Lake Michigan nearby is neat and would trump the others because of it, if the decision strictly came down to geography.
I've seen areas south of Des Moines that are downright beautiful. Iowa is largely farmland which means not much trees outside of state forests. Can be pretty in the summer when the crops are growing.
Des Moines seems like a healthy, growing city. It's on the small side as cities go, so there's not nearly as much to do as the others. If you don't do a lot to begin with, it might not be that bad.
Milwaukee is an interesting and lively place... in a good way. It's more compact and has a more urban vibe to it... in a good way.
As for Minneapolis, I think it's only a couple hours from Duluth and Lake Superior. Minnesota's North Shore area is the most beautiful area I've seen in the midwest so far. Don't mean to offend anyone, I haven't seen it all yet.

That is EXACTLY what the folks in Iowa want you to think.
There PR campaign is working!

I have lot's of family and friends there and they love it. They also are content to know that rest of country thinks it is not a cool place.

I do think Wisconsin's best days are behind it. I would not entertain that place.

The question wasn't about moving to Iowa, it was about moving to Des Moines, Iowa.

Anyway, I love Minneapolis (born there, a lot of family, visit often) so I'm bias to Minneapolis as a great place to live. I can't really speak of Milwaukee. That said, I love living in Des Moines and have no intention of moving anytime soon. Of course DM won't offer the amount of things the other two MUCH larger metro's have to offer (both good and bad) , the question is really, what all do you need to be happy?

Oh yeah....to address the snarky comment about "contests" Des Moines wins? Here just a few recent ones (#1's bolded):

I guess your being defenseive and sarcastic. Saying that,Des Moines is not even as big as Madison,so not sure it even belongs in the discussion.

For housing just need a reasonably priced 1-2 bedroom house or condo that allows a dog. Only other concern is state/local taxes. Have spent most of my career in the mountain west where local taxes are minimal and state taxes are low. Don't want to find out I am getting paid more but taking home less because of taxes.

So far I have some job leads in Des Moines, Milwaukee and may start looking in Minneapolis. Any thoughts on what city is better?
They are all great but the rankings are
Minneapolis
Milwaukee
-
-
Des Moines
