There really aren't a lot of stand-alone bakeries in the northern metro area, as the supermarkets (Pic-n-Save, Sendiks, etc.) seem to have scooped up that niche.

I'm not familiar with the cinnamon scene here, but places to look into include Bay Bakery (Silver Spring Rd., WFB), Alterra Coffee (various locations), and Cafe 1505 (Mequon). I've had tasty baked goods from these places. You might also check out City Market (cafe) on Silver Spring Rd, WFB.

Other options include Fiddleheads (in Thiensville) and whatever that cafe is on Port Washington Road south (I think) of Donges Bay Rd. on the east side of the street (used to be a Fiddleheads, but now it's something different). I didn't like the baked goods from these two places so much, but your mileage may vary. Starbucks, Caribou Coffee, and Stone Creek Coffee also may carry cinnamon buns.

There is a stand-alone bakery on Silver Spring in Whitefish Bay called Regina's that you could check.

I go there for donuts but can't recall whether they have cinnamon rolls.

Can't go wrong with Alterra's; I don't know if they're the best, but they come pretty close if you manage to get them fresh.

Alterra has very good bakery, but it loses the cinnamon roll battle to Fiddleheads IMO.

Just to clarify, Regina's is the same thing as Bay Bakery (it's actually called Regina's Bay Bakery.)
