I can't imagine anyone describing Milwaukee as being conservative.
As for being segregated, the city itself is not.

I agree with you there.

I'm not sure what you consider "the city itself" but the area of what is considered the city Milwaukee is definitely very segregated.

The area that is the Milwaukee metro area is segregated, this is sharply different than the city of Milwaukee itself.

I'm mostly familiar with the south side. As I drive around, go to the stores and restaurants, and see people walking around and sitting on their porches, I can't help but notice just how integrated and diverse it seems. Stats may say otherwise, but Milwaukee city proper (including many inner-ring suburbs) doesn't appear to be the slightest bit segregated from what I can tell.

Look at a map of the city of Milwaukee. Most of those highly segregated areas are part of the city of Milwaukee, not just part of the metro. The city itself is not just downtown. There are parts of the city that stretch past interstate 45 and up to Menominee Falls.

I like the south side of Milwaukee a lot, I lived in that area for a year. There are areas that are heavily Hispanic and it doesn't feel segregated though if you look at the demographics, it is. The north side is much more segregated. There is a very distinct area that is very black and that's just how the demographics are and that's what defines being segregated. There's really nothing to debate about it.

The study you're referencing compares the population of each metro area with where each racial group is living in that metro. Key word: metro

I know well where the city borders of Milwaukee are, you've demonstrated you're unfamiliar with the study or are intentionally trying to mislead about its conclusions. The Milwaukee metro is segregated, the city of Milwaukee is less so.

Have you actually been to Milwaukee!!?!! Milwaukee was Ranked as the Most Segregated City in America every year for longer than I can remember!!! LOL. You're probably one of those little suburbanites aren't you?

Hmm... I wonder what #1 is?

Oh, and for all the people that want to cry about city vs. metro; here's another map which clearly shows yet another breakdown.

I would recommend to all interested in this to read Bruce Murphy's series of articles from the Journal Sentinel on Jan. 13th, 2003.

After reading the article I was very skeptical of the methodology used to create the index that makes Milwaukee appear exceptional in the area of racial segregation.

He presents the argument by some that a better measure is to look at the percentage of blacks who live on blocks which are at least 20% white and 20% black.

Milwaukee fares much better by this measure - 48% of blacks lived on blocks at least 20% white and 20% black.

Only 5% of blacks in Milwaukee lived on blocks which are all black.

Roughly speaking this measure can be visualized from the light red and some of the light blue areas on the map that is linked.

Detroit by comparison (which was the worst) had only 25% of blacks living on blocks which are less than 80% black.
