It's in a fairly bad part of town, I used to live kitty corner from it when I was in college. More importantly is it's 23 blocks from downtown. Stay downtown. The Hilton is good. Windham city center is good. Hyatt is so-so but good enough.

If you've got the dough you could go for Hotel Metro or the Pfister.
Otherwise, Wydnham, Hyatt and Hilton are fall fine choices.
I wouldn't worry about the neighborhood the Ambassador is in. It's right on the edge of the Marquette campus area. Go west, and you're in some fairly rough areas. Go east, you're on the Marquette campus. Go about one mile east, you're downtown.
The Ambassador is a very nice hotel (I stayed there once) great price, but it's isn't really downtown.

I'd say the order of options should be
Hotel Metro - Milwaukee St/Cathedral Sq nightlife and very cool hotel (make sure to check out the rooftop)
Pfister - Milwaukee St/Cathedral Sq nightlife and beutiful historic hotel
Intercontinental - cool upscale nightlife inside.. kinda W like... close to Water st bar area
Ambassador - cool historic hotel
note the Wydnham downtown was redone into the Intercontinental.

While I enjoy the Metro, most of the people I know wouldn't. Especially the price.
BTW, Priceline offers dirt cheap hotels in Milwaukee(other than summer months. You can usually get a 3 star (Hilton or Hyatt) for $45. A 4 star
(Ambassador or Intercontinental)for about $75 to $80.
A few things about Priceline-You pay before you know where you are staying.
No refund. And they can give you a double bed or two beds and smoking or non-smoking. Although, at the hotel, I can usually get my bed and non-smoking option.

Well I've never tried Bacchus but people seem to like it. You may also checkout Mason Street Grill at the Pfister (next door to the Metro) as I think it's good. On Milwaukee St you have a couple other options in Cubanitas and Carnivore (both next door but on Milwaukee St from hotel metro).
Also after dinner if you are looking for an upscale lounge check out Taylors on Jefferson or for a little club feel check out Eurocafe on Mason.

For less expensive fine dining, I love Coquette Cafe in the Third Ward (316 N. Milwaukee St.). Their webpage may not be updated for October, but it provides basic info on the menu, hours, etc.:
Milwaukee Restaurants- French Cuisine
I also agree that Bacchus and Mason Street Grill are good choices. Yanni's is a really great steakhouse that does more than steaks. I've never been to Carnevor, but people rave about the place (though some consider it the most expensive restaurant in downtown Mke, due to the Japanese Wagyu Beef on the menu).
Cubanitas isn't really "fine" dining, but it's a great "business casual" choice for Cuban food. If you like Japanese food, Nanakusa (in the Third Ward) is really good (though a bit pricy). On Jefferson Street is Singha Thai, a popular Thai restaurant in Milwaukee.
