I have to leave Milwaukee (Wauwatosa, Whitefish Bay: relocate, gated, apartment complex)

I grew up on the South Side of Milwaukee, in a culture that downplayed education and celebrated ignorance and bigotry. My mom raised my sister and I alone in a shabby apartment and we didn't have much. But she taught us to respect ourselves by getting an education, by not acting like an idiot by dropping litter or disrespecting others or by being a bigot. She taught us that to say the "N" word was one of the lowest, most vile things to do.

I went to college, and in time came back to Milwaukee. I don't associate with my old friends from before I went to college. Most of them are in a different place now than where I am now. I've found a pocket of the city that suits me well, one that I would like to stay in for awhile -- Sherman Park. I'm active in the community and I've gotten to know many upstanding and well-educated people of all races through these activities. For the most part my neighbors, whether white collar or blue collar, whatever their race or ethnicity, are respectful and are good neighbors.

But yet the ignoramuses make life more difficult. The troglyte who shot another person in the buttocks a block from my house a few years ago -- in broad daylight with tons of kids around. The idiots who got into a heated fight at midnight right next door last month. The people who drop litter. The lady who, just yesterday, came to pick up her sister across the street, sat in the street blasting her horn for about five minutes, then started shouting obscentities when she didn't come out of the house. (Apparently she thought simply going to the front door and ringing the doorbell wouldn't be effective).

It's a battle, but I feel that it's one worth fighting. Despite the *******s with the throbbing bass pouring out of their trunks at 1 am, it's the sense of community that keeps me here. It's the neighbor who rang my doorbell one day to tell me somebody was trying to take my license plate off my car (I confronted the jerk with my big dog and he got away -- without the plate). It's the fact that I know most of my neighbors and have all kinds of interesting conversations with them.

Sometimes leaving town and moving to a new city is the exact thing a person needs to get away from negative friends and situations. If that's the case with you, then I'm sorry, because I can tell you love this city like I do. If you do leave, that's one less smart person and the balance is tipped more toward the idiots. Good luck whatever you decide to do.

Got news for you pal.... white flight occurred *because* of the behavior and attitudes of certain minority groups. People will look out for their best interests, and live where it's safe, clean, and schools are good.
The atrocious crime and schools we now see in certain parts of Milwaukee have nothing to do with white flight.
Explain to me how white flight is the cause of drive-by shootings, stabbings, rapes, arson, habitual truancy, and all the other daily nonsense in the minority communities.
Milwaukee has some major problems right now. And trying to blame it on whites (or white flight) is not only dishonest, but will solve nothing.

It's not a matter of blame. The decent people who made Milwaukee such a great city for so many years are leaving. And now the savages are running it. And ruining it.

I wouldn't say that. I may be moving to Chicago or Milwaukee soon. They both have good and bad about them. Every city has violence, I am in a city of 50k with murders all the time. Most of it sadly are done by minorities. White flight to me is both ignorant, and out of fear. Whites are just less inclined to stay and "fight" the violence. How can you scare a culture that spends it's life raising fearless children? It isn't ignorant for their point of view micro wise, but macrolly it effects all of these great cities by them leaving. If white's all stayed, instead of fled like white sheep, things would be fine.
So I , as a white guy, am taking back a midwestern big city. If I get shot doing so, so bet it. I don't plan to be around many gang banging types anyways. It's called reverse white flight, let them have the suburbs in the middle of nowhere, give me back my cities.

Here in Milwaukee it's very few of us or we are overshadowed by the ignorant folks here who are more of the problem than the solution.

Woah, woah, woah! Stop "dissing" Milwaukee. It's a great city with plenty of smart people... just not on the north side. And it's actually bigger in population and land mass than a lot of other major cities, ( not so small ).

It's not uncommon for someone to get restless and want to try out some place new, and there's no reason why you shouldn't. Just don't go thinking the grass is greener on the other side. A lot of people in your position end up moving back home before it's all said and done.

Also, you underestimate the urbanity of certain southern cities. If you really do want to move south, check into Atlanta (as one already suggested), Houston, Charlotte, Austin, and Dallas (and/or Fort Worth).

I was thinking of Chicago or New York. I have been to NY several times and although it's very dirty, it's a huge city.

I know these problems are in every city but since Milwaukee is so small, it seems like it's a huge problem here.

I know if I move to a bigger city I will find more professional, respectful people to mingle with.

Here in Milwaukee it's very few of us or we are overshadowed by the ignorant folks here who are more of the problem than the solution.

In the south many people are stupid and proud of it ( I lived in Dallas for 7+ yrs). Just keep that in mind.
