Hello
we are thinking of moving to milwaukee (from Chicago)next year with a baby who will be a year old by then.

Any suggestions for areas (zip codes, neighbourhood names, streets etc) that I could start my search?
Criteria: urban- close to a park or a home with small yard/close to lake front if possible. I know that I cannot compare Milwaukee to Chicago, but have heard that that Milwaukee downtown is getting very fun.

I will be working at the Children's Hospital of Wisconsin

Any help would be appreciated!

ZIP code 53211 would be a great choice for you. I'm a big fan of 53211 because I have lived there for quite some time (Actually I now live in Scottsdale, AZ as my primary residence but only for a year).

Having lived in Chicagoland as well (albeit in the 90s), I would say that it is not Chicago, but it does have some city-like features that Chicago would also have, minus the better public transportation. Your price range can be found here, indeed you will have many options, you will have the lake, you will have very close (walking) distance to downtown if you like walking, great recreation opportunities, and certainly MANY eating, drinking, and entertainment opportunities as well.

Just my .02

I think 53202 is great. The neighborhoods in that kinda price range would be Third Ward, Easttown, and Eastside for sure.

If i had that kind of money to play with i would definitely look at whitefish bay or shorewood. Whitefish bay and Shorewood are defintely urban, they don't seem like a suburb

Thanks all for your suggestions...I have started researching based on your recommendations.
BTW: what kind of neighbourhood is Wauwatosa? (would be v.close to work) I heard there is a daycare in the vicinity too.

wauwatosa fits your criteria, but it is not by the lakefront. you also may want to look on the westside of wauwatosa not along milwaukee border. living in wauwatosa would be a very easy jaunt to work for you.

Tosa is bucolic and family oriented. It is more of a sheltered suburban setting than the eastside. It also is further from the lakefront and downtown. It will be convenient for your job and a nice, quiet setting for the family. I believe there is a day care for hospital workers in the vicinity. Depending on your price range you could also look at Elm Grove which borders Tosa.

All of these are good responses....I have nothing to add except to say that I'll take the city of Milwaukee vs the burbs West of 294 in Chicago, any time. You'll enjoy little traffic all over the city. Some of the North Shore burbs mentioned really just blend in from the city East Side neighborhoods and are a mere picturesque 2-5 mile wind around the lakefront to downtown...the East Side has the parks and lakefront you want...Tosa is a solid burb for young familes, close in....and close to your work....no lakefront as mentioned.....but you are 10-15 minutes tops from the lake.
