I have to somewhat respectfully disagree with UW Badgers on this one. While it is true that Muskego doesn't have a huge assortment of restaurants or retail
in Muskego itself, Muskego is in most places within a 5 mile drive to Greendale which has a ton of retail and restaurants (both at the major Southridge Mall and the surrounding areas as well as in the heart of Greendale at its shops downtown). Furthermore, Muskego is very close to (neighboring) New Berlin and Hales Corners - both of which have very busy thoroughfares with a high assortment of shops, restaurants, retail, etc. Muskego is also very close to Brookfield, West Allis, Wauwatosa, Milwaukee and Greenfield.
Finally, Muskego is a suburb in the metro Milwaukee area, and frankly, you can get most places in metro Milwaukee from relatively close-in suburbs such as Muskego within 20 or 25 minutes. With the exception of rush hour, you can be from Muskego to Downtown Milwaukee in 20 minutes.
So...the bottom-line...Muskego doesn't have a huge assortment of stores, bars, retail, restaurants, etc., necessarily itself, but you can find those things very easily and painlessly from Muskego.
Now...I have to say that I personally really like Muskego. I live in Greendale, which is a bit east of Muskego, but I attend a few things in Muskego regularly and am really a fan of the Greendale-Hales Corners-Muskego coridor (they run together bordering one another on the southwestern region of the Milwaukee metro area).
Muskego is quite pretty. Large, wooded areas. Some very nice lakes. One thing I like about this area (Greendale-Hales Corners-Muskego) is that it is hillier and more rolling than much of metro Milwaukee, which in many spots is very flat.
Muskego is very quiet, extremely safe, very good for schools, kids, families, etc. I do think in general it is middle class to upper middle class, but houses aren't necessarily cheap. It still has some twinges of farming touches and rural in portions, but for the most part it is just a nice, open suburban area that isn't as commercialized/retail/busy as neighboring 'burbs like Brookfield and New Berlin.
After living nearby in Greendale and really finding out about Muskego more than I used to know about it, I now know that Muskego is one of my favorite suburbs / communities in all of metro Milwaukee (and there are many really nice communities in this metro area).

As for your question about other areas to consider nearby, I live in Greendale and wholeheartedly endorse it. It is a BEAUTIFUL suburb...just about 5 miles east of Muskego. GREAT for families. One of the best school systems in the country. Very affordable for the most part. Especially in the "original" village portion, Greendale is tough to beat for this area.
I am also a huge fan of Hales Corners, which is between Greendale and Muskego.
Greendale is very historic - in the original village portion it looks like old New England. Historic homes (called Greendale Originals - see this site:
Greendale Life Greendale Today - The shops, history and events in the Village of Greendale, Wisconsin.), sidewalks, walking trails through thick wooded areas, a town center with charming shops, a gazebo, a Town Hall, etc.
Hales Corners and Muskego would offer bigger lots in general than Muskego.

I am a male in my young 30s, married, with two young children (so family stuff - safety, schools, etc. is very important) and I think you couldn't go wrong with Muskego, but would also heartily endorse Hales Corners and Greendale closeby to Muskego.
