It looks like a good portion of the posters in this thread don't even live in Wisconsin currently. Why are you here?

Why are any of us here? Nothing of substance changes from spending time on C-D except maybe enlightenment and enjoyment. I see people here looking for specific answers to regional questions.
One doesn't have to live in an area to offer comment/insight.

I still consider it my home and I'm there multiple times a year. I also graduated from UW and I care about the reputation of the school. I would also like to return someday for good.

That is true.
It caught me by surprise that so many from out of state cared about the UW system or cared about Walkers actions in Wisconsin. I have a hard enough time caring myself & I live here & attend UW-Milwaukee. I can't find myself caring though about what political action, for example, John Kasich is doing in Ohio. My initial hunch was that posters saw a political thread & that's the reason they decided to jump in here. To do the usual political party debating.

It is true that this op does not live in Wisconsin, have only ever visited once, in fact. Have pulled for the Packers from time to time. Once worked for a Milwaukee based brewery.

It is simple. I see a lot of half truths, and outright ignorance displayed. Liking the moves Walker has made, like freeing up Wisconsin school districts to competitively bid their group health insurance coverage, I wanted to step to his defense. That's right, before ACT 10, school districts were compelled to buy their group policies from one entity only, the WEA (Wisconsin Education Association) Trust. Breaking that union-backed monopoly meant better policy value for the employees and a lower operating cost for the school districts.

Walker's initiatives are not all one-sided, as some would have you believe. Note not only the 'negatives' of proposed cuts, but the positives, as well, undercored in the following quote.

[QUOTEUniversity Activism

“Some might claim that we’re making it harder to get government assistance,” he said, highlighting one part of his almost $70 billion plan. “We’re not. We’re making it easier to get a job.”

The budget would eliminate about $300 million from the state’s university system, a roughly 13 percent cut. The system’s flagship, the University of Wisconsin in Madison, has a tradition of anti-war activism and provided much of the youth energy behind the protests that confronted Walker during his union fight.

His plan would also continue a tuition freeze for two years and grant more freedom from state oversight to the system, which university officials have sought.][/quote]

As for the 'You don't live here.', folks. Walker is a national political figure. Wisconsin is viewed as a bastion of progressive thought, enlightened, even. So, the provincialism implicit in 'You don't live here.', is surprising. Maybe, after the spectacle of the ugly protests, a block of legisltors running away, rather than staying to make their case and the union fueled vindictive recall effort, I shouldn't be surprised. Oh,and these observations come from watching Ed and Maddow.

Why do they have to "turn off the spigot" if that's where they're happy? Why do adults need to stop learning if it's a fulfilling experience for them?

I despise anti-intellectual arguments. In extrema, that's how you get disasters like Pol Pot, Biafra, Afghanistan, and Mississippi.

Its wrong to be against war? Should they be PRO war?

And so the students are politically active, so he wants to punish them?

That would make him a horrible person. Our citizens SHOULD be politically active.

So do that without the cuts and the other crap. Simple.

For goodness sake.

Why should people move on??? Because society does NOT have an obligation to keep subsidizing people who are content to never produce that's why.

I despise elitists who think they are entitled to the wealth produced from the labor of others.

How am I "subsidizing" an adult who is paying for college classes?

Your take is the same as Pol Pot's - cut off the heads of the intellectuals! Yeah, that's always been shown to work...go team tyrant!

A society that does not value education is a society in decline.
