I will be moving to the Milwaukee area soon and I'm unfamiliar with it. I am a woman in my twenties so I'm looking for a safe area to live. There are many apartments on Oakland Avenue in the Shorewood area. It seems like there are several bars in that area and college aged people. I'm worried if this area can get rowdy or unsafe. I'm looking for something safe and quiet. Is this a safe area for a single woman to live?
As others have said, the area is generally very safe. If you use common sense, your chance of being a victim of a serious crime is very, very low.
This is probably outdated information, but years ago (mainly in the 1990s) there was a large wave of primarily Russian immigrants that moved to the area. Many of the recent immigrants lived in apartments on Oakland in Shorewood, mostly south of Capitol Drive.
Of course there is nothing wrong with Russian or any other immigrants. However, many of the older, less expensive apartment buildings on that stretch were pretty run down, overcrowded and noisy. I have no idea if this has changed over the years, but I would recommend against taking a place sight unseen.
There's still a decent Russian population in the area, and one of the Russian food stores are right on Oakland too. And Russians are kind of crazy in their own way, but as general we aren't criminals and not your worst enemies.

Ha! I don't have anything against Russians. In fact, the reason I'm familiar with some of those apartments is I had Russian friends that lived in them. I remember hearing stories about some of the crazy things that there neighbors would do. Again, this is about 20 years ago.
I just wanted to make sure that the OP didn't take a place sight unseen and end up with a little culture shock.
