why do you live where you do?
What made you decide to flee the city or to stay?

Downtown Milwaukee
I live in downtown Milwaukee and love living here. Despite the cold Milwaukee is a walkable city, has great parks, above average nightlife, festivals all summer long, good restaurants and generally of high quality of life.

Let's see... the first time I left was to move to Chicago. I moved back later on for a job transfer.
The second time I was transferred out of Milwaukee. Warm weather got the best of me from that point forward. That's what keeps me away to this day. The city is great, but the weather isn't that great. Some people truly don't mind winter, but I'm not one of those people.
Today it is 74 here on my deck in Arizona, and that makes it something like 70 degrees warmer than Milwaukee. Here we have 9 nice months... Milwaukee usually gets four, and only three if you live on the shore. I remember summers where the weather did not get "nice" until the end of June (cold and foggy to that point). Often, it wasn't nice past mid-September. Not enough time to enjoy the outdoors the way I like to (without a snowmobile suit).

Great post 43-87...very good stuff.
You know, it is kind of a darn shame, too, because man, when the weather IS nice in Milwaukee, it is REALLY nice. A 60s, 70s, 80s day with sun and a lake breeze in the summer or an early autumn day with the sun shining strongly, leaves turning majestic colors, 50s or 60s for a high and the smell of brats/grills, etc., for a late season Brewers game or a Packers tailgate Sunday...that is great stuff.
Milwaukee's weather - unless you love cold/winter/snow - is generally either miserable or heavenly...there isn't much middle-ground. It is just a shame that the heavenly doesn't last a few more months.
But also important to note is that people act like Milwaukee's weather is miserable, and while for much of the year it is (again, unless you like cold/chilly/snow/etc.), when it DOES get nice, it tends to get REALLY nice.

I was born on Long Island, New York. So, I guess I just stay hear because I really do not have the option of moving right now. I would like to live somewhere cheaper and warmer. LOL!

With a winter like we're having now, it's hard to stay positive. February is always a miserable month but this year is reeee-diculous. I want the snow to end, I want to walk outside without facing a wind chill of 20 below zero. I want to ride my bike, take the dog for a walk comfortably, walk around without a coat. I want to sit at Miller Park in a T-shirt and shorts and watch the Brew Crew. Hang out in a park, grill some steaks in my backyard sipping a beer.
Here's what keeps me in Milwaukee: that first nice day of the spring. If you've never lived in a cold climate, you'll never understand the sheer joy, the rapture, when the temps first hit 70 degrees. Everybody throws the coats in the closet, gets outside and enjoys the warmth. There is nothing like the first nice day of the year.

Walker's Point
I live in Walker's Point(5th Ward) and I love it. I don't want to spend 900 on a one bedroom to the north in the Third ward so I chose Walker's Point. Soon to find out we have great bars, clubs, restaurants and only 5 blocks or 1 mile to downtown. A 5 dollar cab ride from 2nd n' National will get you anywhere you need to be. I enjoy walking to Steny's eating at Marchases Olive Pit or Crazy Water, and then down to Shaker's Cigar Lounge to smoke my Victor Sinclair 55 series.
I think Walker's Point will be in 10-15yrs the Third Ward so get in early. Historic homes on 3rd street, 4th street, 5th street between National and Washington St. Let's not forget the Waterfront Condo's, Moct, Alterra, The Social, Garden Antiques among several antique shops.
Walker's Point might be the best bang for your buck if you want to be close to downtown. As far as crime and I have lived here for 2 yrs and I have only had my car broken into once, a lot less compared to how many times my car has been stolen/broken into on the East Side.
Walker's Point is just one of many unique neighborhoods MKE has to offer, I suggest to you go discover these assets soon.

This is dead-on accurate.
It is almost like a city-wide celebration in Milwaukee. That first Saturday when temps soar above 75 degrees and the sun is shining, the lakefront and Bradford Beach are so jam-packed and everyone is joyous. It is a great time of the year in MKE.
