Hi all - I am considering buying a house on the eastside, likely in the Cambridge Woods/Heights neighborhood. How necessary is a home security system?

Look at the local police news feed... Even the safest neighborhoods have lots of activity going on, burglaries included.

Did you get a chance to talk with some people in the CW neighborhood about what they do (if they have home security, etc.)?

Cambridge Woods is not a terrible area by any means. Mostly college students. Occasionally what I will call "troubled youth" will cross the river and make the trek into the area to steal things, maybe rob someone. I wouldn't say it's abnormal.

Probably not necessary at all with a dog that barks. The issues over there are the aforementioned occasional small roving posses of good kids in the process of turning their lives around (but in the meantime breaking into locked cars). Probably an occasional carjacking. Burglaries are more likely to be garage break-ins.

Any residential burglaries over there are probably student occupied residences. A lot of them invite crime into their homes with business transactions, usually exchanging cash for recreational products. The retail salespeople who make the delivery will often look carefully at the condition of their customer's home, and if it appears to need to be cleaned out, they will furnish leads to entrepreneurs in the field of housecleaning. The cleaners will arrive later to clean out the consumer electronics and other valuables while the students are at class.

So basically, if you don't have drugs delivered to your house by courier, don't host red cup parties, and don't manufacture crimes of opportunity, you probably don't need a security system.

The location is outstanding, especially since you have a dog. The East Bank river trail and all of the attached trails around the urban ecology center are great places to walk the dog, run, ride your bike, etc. The Oak Leaf trail goes right past the neighborhood too. Estabrook Park has a beer garden... Shorewood is right there... it's pretty ideal in terms of location.
