Default Washington Heights

What are posters' thoughts on the Washington Heights area of Milwaukee?

I am amazed that it is kind of underrated in these forums it seems. I always hear here (and myself sometimes fall into the trap) of the virtues and praises for Milwaukee as it relates to the East Side, Third Ward, Bay View, and Downtown, however, it seems like we overlook other very nice areas of Milwaukee.

I have gotten to drive through the Washington Heights area alot lately due to visiting family in the nearby Lenox Heights area, and I am amazed at how nice and gorgeous it is. I think longtime Milwaukeeans may take this a bit for granted, but for those somewhat new to Milwaukee, or unfamiliar with Milwaukee, or even longtimers from the suburbs not familiar with the city itself, this is just a real tremendous jewel.

Or what am I missing here? In many respects, at least from my driving through surface experience, I think that this may be an even more desirable place to live than the east side. It is just so neat with its architecture, layout, etc.

I moved into this area in July and moved into Greendale, overall I am relatively OK that I picked Greendale as it is a really nice community, however, a part of me wishes I had known better and considered the WHeights.

Any thoughts? Isn't this underrated as a great area in the city/metro, or am I missing something?

I live just north of Washington Heights, in Sherman Park.

I love the Heights. In fact, at some point in the next few years I'd love to buy one of the nice homes there and move into the neighborhood. There a lot of great stuff to walk to, the neighborhood is full of great houses, tree lined streets, and a diverse, family friendly population.

The Heights' location is both good and bad. It's good in the sense that one can get just about anywhere in the metro in a short period of time. Downtown, 10 minutes. Mayfair, 10 minutes. Airport, 10 minutes.

A drawback of the Heights' location is that it's somewhat removed from the more hip, happening parts of the Downtown and East Side. To go out to eat or shop Downtown you pretty much have to drive to get there.

I'll throw my two cents in even though I now only spend a couple months in Milwaukee per year.

I think the Heights is underrated. I have a few friends in that area and have spent plenty of time there as recently as last fall (basically the last "nice" days to barbecue...). I would agree that it is underrated, and more open to new faces than other areas of the city.

The perception is probably more a result of proximity to less desirable areas, than the area itself. I don't think there's anything wrong with the area. It's another nice area of the city with classic, bombproof homes. It's centrally located as well. I'm a fan of the urban residential qualities of the area, sidewalks, street parking, and old tree-lined neighborhoods. My friends seemed to think it was reasonably affordable, although "affordable" means different things to different people.

Before I left Milwaukee, Washington Heights was one of my favorite areas aside from Shorewood and Wauwatosa. It's beautiful and has a very nice ambiance. In fact, I used to run and do wind sprints in Washington Park. Yes, I would agree that the Heights are underrated indeed.

Washington Heights is, roughly:

US41 on the east, 60th Street on the west, North Avenue on the north, and Vliet Street on the south (maybe a few blocks south of Vliet).

And to add, if you are "on the ground" physically looking in the Washington Heights area, you'll see "Washington Heights" signs lining the streets on the poles so you'll actually be able to decipher usually - by the neighborhood signage - that you are in the area.

I've lived in Milwaukee for 8 years now, and Washington Heights is the only place I'd live. As all the other posters mentioned, it has a good location, lovely homes and a diverse and community oriented population - and you know your neighbors.

With that said, however, this winter has gotten the best of us, and we're relocating to Sacramento. As I get older, I just can't stand the cold and snow for 4 - 5 months a year. BTW, our house will be on the market soon, so watch for a listing if you want to move into this neighborhood.
