Smile Question about Catholic Schools in Milwaukee

Our family currently lives in Virginia Beach, VA but may be moving to Milwaukee. We send our son to a Catholic school. Out here, you can enroll in any school/parish regardless of where you live. Previous to moving to VA, we lived in St. Louis. They have strict rules regarding parish/school boundaries. You must join the parish associated with your neighborhood/zip code. Thus, you must send your child to that school.
What are the "rules" in Milwaukee regarding parish boundaries?

What are the "desirable" Catholic schools (and neighborhoods?).

I searched the archdiocese website and was amazed (and happy) to see so many Catholic Schools (just like in St. Louis). There are about 6 here!!!

Thank you all in advance for taking the time to read/respond!!!

Oh, we would look for a house in the 300-400K range. Out here, that gets you a townhouse.........hopefully in Wisconsin it will buy a bit more!!!! (Commute/housing)----The job would be wherever your major newspaper building is located (sorry for not being more specific!!!!)

As long as you pay your monthly requirement in addition to tuition, I believe that your children can attend any Catholic school. I would recommend St. Mary's Parish School in Hales Corners. My niece attended school there K-8 and my nephew is in 6th grade. However, the public schools in outlying suburban communitites here are excellent (not Milwaukee Public Schools). Good luck in your decision making!

I have lived in Milwaukee all my life and will try to provide some helpful info.

Yes, I am fairly sure you can go to almost any Catholic school, long as you are a paying customer! But of course, check with the Archdiocese or start contacting specific Catholic school to get more information. I went to a very desired Catholic high school in Milwaukee, and I think it's a great education! Mine was in a "bad" neighborhood though, it really was a strange paradox to experience every day.

Well, within Milwaukee proper (the city), there honestly are not a lot of desirable areas. But if you are looking to spend $300-400K, you should be looking to the neighboring areas anyway, which are very nice. Wauwatosa ("'tosa") is a great area (mostly) kind of nestled in Milwaukee...it is one of the places I would want to live if I could afford it right now. You'll find nice houses, some historic, but most property sizes are small. It's a good family area, and has close proximity to all kinds of opportunities and fun, both in 'tosa and Milwaukee. The main dowside is it gets tons of through traffic from all over, as a big part of it runs along a corridor or two connecting downtown to the burbs.

There is another awesome place to live, and this one actually is in Milwaukee proper, a little place called the Washington Highlands. Holy freaking guacamole. The houses are, bar none, the biggest and most beautiful houses within the city limits. And with the market the way it is, you can find one there starting at probably a little less than $300K. If I were rich, I would so definitely live there, because I don't really want to be in the outlying suburbs. The Highlands itself is somewhat closed off, which is nice because you won't get much traffic in there. That is the spot for Milwaukeeans who have made it in life. The surrounding neighborhood, dubbed the Washington Highlands, is pretty nice too, but it's like an appetizer for the Highlands. Even thought it's kind of close to North Avenue, which is where things really start getting shady, you would never know it by walking around the Highlands neighborhood. That, I think, is one the the city's most precious gems. My wife and I used to walk through the Highlands just to admire the houses (I am a former architecture student) when we lived in the southern part of the Heights area. Very safe and secure and BEAUTIFUL little exclusive area within the city.

Other than those areas, the nicest ones nearby are Shorewood and Whitefish Bay. In each of these you have to drive through, sometimes away from the main through roads, to see where the really nice areas are, but they are definitely there, for those who can afford them.

There are places just as nice that are a little farther out from the city of Milwaukee in all directions, but to cover them would take me forever. If I were moving here with $300-400K to blow on a house, I'd probably be in the Highlands. If the city scares you at all, then think about suburbs...Elm Grove, Fox Point, maybe Hales Corners...but in all those cases the commute would be annoying, to me at least.

As an aside, I do not have much money...my wife and I will probably spend $200K on our next house, and in order to maximize that, we will be looking into the state of Georgia. Plus, the taxes, segregation, public schools, weather, etc - all of these are far worse here in Milwaukee than in that part of the country. A part of me can't belive you or anyone would leave Virginia Beach to come to Milwaukee. Yuck.

I went to Catholic schools my entire life, and they really gave me a great education. If you have girls, I graduated from Divine Savior Holy Angels, it is a all girl school, but very good academically. If you have boys, Marquette High, Pius, Catholic Memorial, all great schools, for high schools. If your kids are younger, Christ King, St. Sebastian, St. Dominics, St. Roberts, there are plenty to choose from. Ok, I see you have a boy,

We live in Racine County and our daughter attends Catholic elementary school in Milwaukee County (Oak Creek). Existing students always have priority for enrollment but if there are openings, you shouldn't have a problem. There are many good Catholic schools.

St Matthew's in Oak Creek is academically strong and the school families are very active in the parish. We switched parishes when our daughter started school because of the sense of community we felt when we visited for a mass compared to our old parish. I really can't imagine my daughter attending a public school. The structure and emphasis on developing fundamental study habits are wonderful.

Honestly you do not have to live in a specific area to be able to send your child to any private school. We live right on the border of Milwaukee and Menomonee Falls and my step son goes to Saint Matthias Catholic school and I am sending my daughter to Aquias Academey located in Menomonee Falls. I did some research on this school and they use teh Integral Formation of teaching. The definition of this is the Harmonious and whole education of all dimensions of your child. They not only focus on the education of your child but also the social, emotional etc. They also have a smaller class size so that the teachers can focus on each and every child. Also for the home that you would like to purchase I would look more towards Menomonee Falls, New Berlin etc. I work for a mortgage company also and have noticed that you can also get a much larger home for not even that price. If you are looking to spend that much in Wisconsin you are pretty much going to get a Wisconsin Mansion. You could almost get a four to five bedroom home in Menomonee Falls or New Berlin a surrounding area of Milwaukee for 250 to 315 at the absolute most. But in Wisconsin you do not have to live in a specific region to send your child to a private school or Catholic school. It does have to be within a distance that is not going to make you struggle to get there though. If you need anything else or have any questions please feel free to ask and I hope you find what you are looking for. Have a wonderful day.
