Default New Berlin

Hello from Oregon,

We are looking at possibly having to transfer to the New Berlin area from Oregon. I know nothing about WI, and would appreciate any info you all could offer. The job is in New Berlin, but where are the best areas to live?

Of course it would be a huge change, we are used to going to the beach almost every weekend to ride the quads on the sand dunes. We have wet winters, but hardly any snow, that is mostly in the mountain ranges. What is the weather like? Do you have issues with crime? (Portland Oregon really doesn't have a lot of serious crime). Oregon is really a very nice place to live. What towns would you recommend to live in that are close to New Berlin? Since I would be looking for employment, what is the job market like for Executive Assistants?

Thank you in advance for any information,

TJ

You may have better luck with the exec assistant job (brookfield, tosa, etc) unless the market has changed. I had lived in NB for 13 (or so) years and thought it was ok...I know it has changed quite a bit since I left but....

What about atv riding, are there any sand dunes in the area? I have been searching on line at housing, we probably wouldn't live in New Berlin, but his job would be in New Berlin. What is the weather like, how much snow do you get? How hot does it get in the summer, and how long does summer last? Is it humid?

Sand dunes in the New Berlin area, no. Wisconsin is more green with landscape. There might be sand dunes else where in the state(outside big cities), but I have never seen any.

Personally, I really like the NB/Brookfield area(next to each other). Tons of shopping and whatnot. It's really grown. I would live there if given the opportunity. We lived in Muskego which isn't far from NB either, but there isn't much there, but within easy shopping.

This past winter was very snowy and cold, but winter here usually is. Summers are hot/humid, but you get cooler days as well. Wisconsin is great because no matter the weather, there is always something to do or something going on. I was never bored living in Wisconsin for 37 years. Now living in Iowa, that's a whole lot of boredom and we can't wait to get back home! Good Luck.

I grew up in New Berlin and my parents still live there, so I have about 25 years of knowledge about the city.

1) Crime is very low in the Milwaukee suburbs. While you may hear about the soaring crime rates in Milwaukee, the surrounding areas are very safe. If you're like me you will learn to loath the police more than anything. New Berlin fire and safety departments are highly overfunded and the police are bored. The highlight of their week is busting out high school drinking parties.

2) Sand dunes, no. However, the west side of New Berlin is rather rural and you could probably find some fields to ride ATV's around in.

3) For weather, you will see it all. We just had a rather brutal winter. In January it gets in the negatives and you will see a lot of snow. By August we will frequent the 90's and probably hit a day or two in the 100's. We truly experience all 4 seasons (and sometimes all in one day.)

4) There are alot of nice area's in the burbs of Milwaukee. New Berlin, Brookfield, Elm Grove. Though it's a rather large area, traffic isn't bad and it's very easy to get around. I commute 30 minutes to work and I'm clear across town. So if you find a nice area that you like and it's 20 miles away, I'd still seriously consider it.

Thank you all so much, this transfer is seriously scary.

I heard that NB has water issues, do any of you know anything about that?

I am not apposed to driving 30 minutes to work In Portland OR you could live 20+ miles from work and it may take you an hour or more to get there. I used to commute 3 hours a day and we lived just over the river.

Oregon is not humid at all, very even weather, although this winter has lasted forever. Living in the valley is nice, you are an 1 1/2 away from the ocean and 45 minutes from the mountains.

It's exciting, but my grown children would stay in Oregon, that is the hard part.

What is the job market like? Administrative Assistants here make between $10 to$17 an hour depending on experience. I have over 10 years experience in the field, but also coached Volleyball for quite a few years. What is the health industry like, are there many health clubs? I am considering getting my personal trainers certification.

The one thing I am happy about is the fact that it is green, we were almost transferred to Texas, and there isn't a lot of green down there.

We did a little research and found that there are dunes, the Silver Lake Dunes, but they are not in WI. What about riding snow mobiles? Since you get a lot of snow, is there skiing?

I know, a lot of questions. Do all of the homes come with at least a 1/4 acre lot? That is not the norm in Oregon.

Thanks again,
tj

You might want to look out in Lake Country(Delafield, Pewaukee, Hartland, Oconomowoc, Sussex, Merton areas) You can get more for your $ and a bit more land. Lots of people ride snow mobiles here. There are trails and people even ride on the frozen lakes in the winter. People cross country ski too. There are several small ski hills around as well for down hill.

Thank you Sunflower53072,

Oregon has huge mountains, it doesn't seem like there are any mountains there.

Bally's, a national health club chain has four locations. Then there's numerous YMCAs and there's the Wisconsin Athletic Club with six locations. There's also some smaller ones springing up. Bally's doesn't dominate everything anymore.

1/4 acre lot is considered pretty small in the suburbs. I think you'd be happy with New Berlin, Brookfield (pricier homes), or west of there. No mountains but on a Great Lake, in fact you'll find many lakes and parks here. No issues with water in New Berlin...just some past controversy on where the water supply would come from.
