Default Looking for an apartment near Marquette

I am a 22 yearold student starting my first year at Marquette Law School in August and am looking for apartments in the area. I have read on this forum that the East Side appears to be a good area, both in relative safety and in my age group. Is this accurate? I also happen to be in a wheelchair, so I am interested to know if anyone knows anything about accessibility in the area.

Yep. Most everyone on the forum is in agreement about the East Side - a very nice part of Milwaukee, especially for folks in your life situation (single I am guessing, going to school, young, etc.). Urban (have to use some basic street smarts) but overall quite safe.

You might also look at housing / apts. right around Marquette. The area has a reputation as having a slightly negligible greater chance for crime, but really, the area is quite safe and filled with MU students / young folks, etc., and would be a good option for you too.

Finally, not sure of your budget, but the Third Ward / Downtown, would also be hard to beat, as there are apartments to be found in both besides just the pricey condos, etc.

That is a great question, and unfortunately, I just don't have the answer as I am not in a chair. Part of me would *guess* that you would find pretty good accessibility as all of the areas I listed - but the one you questioned about too (the East Side) - cater to so many people - high population density, with so many young people, that likely they encounter many folks in chairs and thus are built accessibly (unlike, say, maybe more remote suburban towns). But then part of me isn't sure, as a lot of the housing / rental stock on the East Side is older / almost-historic homes/buildings, etc., so I don't know if they would have the accessibility that newer buildings would have.

I am sorry I cannot help you as much with this part of your question and hopefully someone else can hop on with that part with more knowledge about it.

But overall I think you'll be fine. Here is a tip guaranteed to make your stay at MU LS enjoyable: Regularly get a bowl of chili (noodles, beans, cheese, sour cream, etc.) at Real Chili!! That alone makes the MU area worthwhile!

Good luck to you!

The east side is very nice but I wouldn't rule out the Marquette campus area. Marquette's campus area is quite safe, especially the campus-owned and run apartment buildings which always have locked lobbies, the buildings are in good repair, etc. You could contact student services (or whatever department is in charge of housing) and inquire about wheelchair accessible Marquette-owned apartments. The east side is pretty safe, but there has been more crime in the area lately.

I'd start by talking with Marquette for your needs. The people are very kind and helpful there. I've known people to go to MU law school and live near Marquette and others who didn't and all did fine. My first thought was former head of Student Affairs Andy Thon SJ, but I cannot think of who replaced him in that role as Andy has stepped down. But don't hesitate to contact MU for assistance.

Default Off Campus Housing

The office that you would contact at Marquette is the Office of Residence Life- University Apartments and Off Campus Housing. The info is here: Marquette University - Off-Campus Renting

Yes I would recommend the campus area, check out the Library Hill apartments on Wisconsin ave, they have a locked lobby, a gym, and they are only a few blocks away from the campus.

I would definitely recommend looking somewhere near the Marquette campus. Not sure what your budget is, but like the previous poster suggested, Library Hill apartments are really nice.

I practically stayed on campus for my first three years at Marquette. I can say from experience it really helps to be as close to campus as possible...especially during the winter months. =) I'm not sure how familiar you are with the area, but if you can help it, try not to go further than the Olin Engineering building...because after that...the area gets a bit questionable...

I agree with the idea of living near Marquette. I don't agree with not going further than Olin Engineering building. Which direction did you mean? West? South?

I wouldn't go past State street to the North. I wouldn't go past the hwy to the South. I wouldn't go past 25th St or so to the West. I'd go unlimited to the East of Campus. Most everything in between those areas is Marquette populated.

There have been multiple threads on law students and Marquette. If it were me, I'd live near Marquette, plenty of options, plenty of people your age and close to it if you are 22 in this case. You are there to commit a ton of time to law school and your work, and you'll find as this poster suggested that you'll want to be near the school for study, class etc...and not drive or take bus across town all the time. You can live across town when you finish school in three short years. You can also visit those areas when you get a little free time here and there. That's what I'd do. If you can manage your time well, and can go back and forth without problem, then by all means look in some of those other areas to live away from Marquette. They are more desirable, but living at and near Marquette is perfectly fine and safe.

Marquette has strong public safety, rides, and escorts 24hrs. Many of your fellow students will be living near school too. Talk to office of Residence Life. They'll give you lots of info.
