New York has about one sixth the crime found in Detroit, actually. NYC has become the safest major city in the U.S.

True, and that of course is because of cost of living. The average Manhattan apt cost is well over seven figures.

Detroit is inexpensive, even by average major metro standards.

Not really. Housing projects are sited cheek by jowl next to luxury high rises in Manhattan and NYC includes the Bronx for christ's sake.

Crime is down for many reasons, but a major one is because, for better or worse, Guiliani cracked skulls while in office.

While people's recommendations on the area are good, pay attention to the comment on the schools. If you live in the city of milwaukee, the schools stink-even the ones on the east side ( I know from experience) but if you can afford private, you may be ok.
