Can anyone tell us where we should go for cost effective carpeting, fixtures (lighting, door knobs, plumbing fixtures, ect...), and who you might recommend as contractors?

We will need people who can install carpet, paint our home ect.... and of course coming from Oregon, we know no one. We have experience
with contractors and subs, and have heard of the nightmares where people have paid in advance only to have been taken. I always check out whom ever we hire, so honesty is important.

I'm a condo dweller, so I don't have a whole lot to say about painters, carpinters, etc.... But for building supplies, fixtures, doors, and other such things, take a look at HOBO (Home Owners Bargain Outlet): Welcome to HOBO Online!. They specialize in discount stuff.

Habitat for Humanity's Restore has a lot of decent things for cheap. They are on Hawley Road. As far as contractors, ask your neighbors or just get several quotes from phone book listings and then ask to see references. You can always check them with the BBB as well. The Milwaukee BBB also puts out a yellow pages of everyone that gets their seal of approval.
